Northern Command Holds Quarterly Subedar Majors’ Conclave on Troop Welfare, Training
The Indian Army’s Northern Command has held its quarterly Subedar Majors’ Conclave, bringing together senior Junior Commissioned Officers from formations and units across the command to discuss issues affecting troops, administration, training and day-to-day unit functioning.
The conclave centred on an interaction between the Command Subedar Major and Subedar Majors representing different formations and units. The discussions covered a broad range of concerns linked to troop welfare, administrative matters, training and other subjects relevant to the effectiveness of units under Northern Command.
According to the command, the forum served as a channel for senior JCOs to exchange views, share experiences from their respective formations and raise ground-level issues faced by soldiers. It also enabled feedback from units to reach the higher command structure while ensuring that organisational priorities and expectations were communicated clearly to troops.
The meeting also highlighted the place of Subedar Majors in the Indian Army’s regimental system. As the senior-most JCO at unit level, a Subedar Major is responsible for mentoring soldiers, maintaining discipline and morale, safeguarding regimental traditions and acting as a crucial link between officers and troops.
The Command Subedar Major appointment itself is a comparatively recent addition to the Army’s command structure. Northern Command became the first Army Command to appoint a Command Subedar Major in June 2025. The role was created to give senior commanders direct inputs on matters concerning Junior Commissioned Officers and Other Ranks.
Northern Command has continued to use such periodic engagements with Subedar Majors to review operational, administrative and training challenges. A previous quarterly interaction in July 2026 focused on operational preparedness, technology integration, administration and training, reflecting the expanding role of senior JCO leadership within the command.
The latest conclave reinforced the Subedar Major’s role not only as a senior soldier and adviser, but also as a mentor, leader and custodian of the traditions and ethos that underpin the Indian Army’s regimental system.
