The 27-year-old engineer from Lucknow walked across the hallowed Antim Pag at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Gaya, on September 5, 2026, completing a remarkable journey from the corporate world to becoming a commissioned officer of the Indian Army.

Before wearing the stars on his shoulders, Shardendu had already built the kind of career many young engineers aspire to achieve. A highly qualified technology professional, he worked as a Cloud Engineer at Amazon with an annual package of around ₹46 lakh and had also secured an opportunity with aerospace major Airbus.

But there was another ambition that neither salary nor corporate success could replace — serving in the Indian Army.

Inspired by His Father's 36 Years of Army Service

Shardendu grew up watching the life of a soldier closely.

His father, Honorary Captain Raj Kumar Tiwari, served the nation for 36 years in the Army Service Corps. For Shardendu, joining the Army was therefore much more than choosing another profession. It was an opportunity to continue a family tradition of military service.

A resident of Neelmatha in Lucknow with family roots in Pipergaon in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur district, Shardendu studied at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Chandimandir, Haryana.

He subsequently pursued engineering and completed his M.Tech in Computer Science and Information Security from Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh. His academic journey eventually opened the doors to a promising career in the technology industry.

Yet his ultimate destination lay elsewhere.

Eight Attempts, But He Refused to Give Up

Shardendu's journey to the Army was not an overnight success story.

He faced repeated setbacks during the selection process, appearing for Army selection eight times before finally earning his recommendation.

For many, repeated rejection might have been enough reason to abandon the dream — particularly when a successful corporate career was already waiting as an alternative.

Shardendu chose persistence instead.

He continued preparing and returned to the selection process until he was finally recommended for the Technical Graduate Course through the 14 Services Selection Board, Allahabad. His name subsequently appeared in the TGC merit list, clearing the way for his journey to OTA Gaya.

His story is a reminder that failure does not necessarily mean the end of an ambition. Sometimes it simply means the journey requires another attempt.

From Cloud Engineer to Senior Under Officer

Leaving behind his corporate career, Shardendu entered OTA Gaya and exchanged office meetings and technology projects for drill squares, physical training, field exercises and the demanding routine of military training.

He did not merely complete the course.

During his time at the academy, Shardendu rose to the prestigious cadet appointment of Senior Under Officer (SUO) — one of the highest leadership appointments held by an Officer Cadet at OTA Gaya.

It was a remarkable progression for someone who, not long before, had been working as a Cloud Engineer.

The engineer who once built his career around technology was now being prepared to lead soldiers.

The Day the Dream Became Reality

On September 5, 2026, the years of preparation, eight attempts at selection, the decision to leave a lucrative career and the demanding months at the academy culminated in one defining moment.

Shardendu Tiwari was commissioned as an officer of the Indian Army.

For his father, who devoted 36 years of his own life to the Army, watching the next generation enter the same uniform marked the continuation of a proud military legacy.
