Indo-Argentine Army Expedition Climbs Mt Kamet, Mt Abi Gamin in Uttarakhand

New Delhi, October 6, 2026: A joint Indo-Argentine Army mountaineering expedition has successfully climbed Mt Kamet and Mt Abi Gamin in Uttarakhand, adding a fresh chapter to military cooperation between India and Argentina.

The expedition was jointly flagged in after its successful completion by Chief of the Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth and Commodore Mariano Ruben Garbini of the Argentine Armed Forces.

Led by Lieutenant Colonel Chirag Chatterjee, the team included 25 Indian climbers and 10 Argentine climbers. The expedition scaled Mt Kamet, which stands at 7,756 metres, and Mt Abi Gamin at 7,355 metres, despite difficult weather conditions and heavy snowfall in the high Himalayas.

The climb demanded sustained endurance, teamwork and technical mountaineering ability as the participants operated at extreme altitude and negotiated difficult terrain under rapidly changing weather conditions.

This was the third joint mountaineering effort undertaken by the two armies. It follows earlier successful ascents of Mt Aconcagua in Argentina and Mt Kun in Ladakh in 2025.

The Indian Army said the latest expedition reflected the trust, teamwork and camaraderie that underpin the expanding military relationship between the two countries.

According to the Army, such joint expeditions give personnel from both forces the chance to work together in demanding conditions, share mountaineering expertise and build professional and personal bonds.

The successful ascent of the two Himalayan peaks also highlights the wider defence engagement between India and Argentina, with adventure and mountaineering activities serving as an important channel for military-to-military cooperation.
