Kishtwar Cloudburst: Indian Army and Agencies Launch Extensive Rescue Operations After Tragic Flash Floods
A sudden cloudburst in Honzar village, located in the Kishtwar district, has resulted in flash floods that have claimed the lives of at least seven individuals, while 19 remain unaccounted for, according to local officials. The catastrophe has also left five people in critical condition, prompting an immediate response from multiple agencies.
The Indian Army quickly mobilized two units to assist the civil administration in rescue missions. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were deployed, with three additional teams on standby. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) unit from Punjab was sent to the scene to support relief efforts.
Heavy rainfall temporarily suspended some rescue operations, but the Indian Army continued to supply meals, rations, and medical care to the affected residents. Officials stressed that despite the adverse weather conditions, rescue operations are ongoing.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Udayabhaskar Billa reported, “So far, seven bodies have been recovered, and 17 individuals have been rescued. Among those rescued, five are in critical condition. At least 19 people remain missing.”
The administration of Jammu & Kashmir has declared an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of those who have died. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts with state officials.
In another incident, a cloudburst was reported over Amarnath in South Kashmir. Fortunately, no casualties or significant damage have been reported.
