Indian Air Force to Conduct Large-Scale Exercise Near Nepal and China Border

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to conduct an extensive exercise in the northern sector of the country from September 22 to September 30, 2025, as indicated by a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the government. The exercises will take place near the borders with Nepal and China, in an area of significant strategic importance.
The chosen location for the exercise is near Tibet's Ngari Gunsa airbase, a dual-purpose facility managed by China at an elevation of 4,274 meters. Since its establishment in 2010, the base is considered a vital element in China's military strategy along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) by Indian defense planners.
The closeness of the drills to Nepal has garnered attention. Situated between India and China, Nepal is under increasing geopolitical pressure. Despite China's increased diplomatic efforts in recent years, India remains Nepal's primary trade partner, providing approximately 65% of its imports, compared to China's 15%.
According to military analysts, the forthcoming IAF exercise aims to demonstrate India's aerial readiness and deterrent capability in the high-altitude region. The timing, being less than two weeks away, reflects New Delhi’s resolve to bolster its northern defenses amid shifting regional power dynamics.
