Five BSF Personnel Injured as Convoy Vehicle Overturns on Jammu-Srinagar Highway, Driver Critical
Five Border Security Force personnel were injured on Saturday when a BSF convoy vehicle overturned on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway near Chamba-Seri in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, with police saying the driver remained in serious condition.
The accident took place on NH-44 as a BSF truck moving from Kashmir towards Jammu, as part of a Jammu-bound convoy, lost control and turned over. One report identified the vehicle as JK04J-0663. The exact reason for the mishap has not yet been officially established, and authorities said further details were still awaited.
The injured personnel were identified as Sub-Inspector Ghar Singh, son of Mela Ram and a resident of Jammu; driver Shamim Ahmed, 38, son of Abdul Qayoom and a resident of Karnah in Kupwara district of north Kashmir; Constable Sunil Kumar, 35, son of Ramesh Lal and a resident of Jammu; Constable Parshtum Kumar, also reported as Purshotam Kumar, 36, son of Paratem or Pritam Chand and a resident of Jammu; and Constable Chandan Yadhav, also reported as Yadav, 38, son of Ravender or Ravinder Yadav and a resident of Bengal.
Police said Shamim Ahmed’s condition was serious.
A joint rescue effort was launched immediately after the overturning. Army personnel, police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, local residents and fellow BSF members evacuated the injured from the scene and shifted them to District Hospital Ramban.
Hospital authorities confirmed that all five were under treatment. Later accounts differed slightly on the extent of the injuries: some officials said four of the personnel were out of danger, while the driver continued to receive treatment for serious injuries. Dr Mohammad Rafi, Medical Superintendent in-charge at District Hospital Ramban, said the injured were being treated and were out of danger, adding that they could be referred to a higher centre if needed.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated proceedings. Officials said an inquiry would look into the circumstances that led to the accident.
The Ramban stretch of NH-44 is a crucial but difficult mountain corridor connecting Jammu with the Kashmir Valley. The highway section is known for sharp bends, steep gradients and heavy traffic that includes civilian vehicles as well as security convoys, making road movement on the route particularly challenging.
On the same day, a separate road accident in Doda district left one civilian dead and others injured. Officials said that incident was unrelated to the BSF convoy mishap in Ramban.
No separate official statement from the BSF was available at the time of filing, beyond the police and hospital accounts. Updates on the driver’s condition and the findings of the inquiry were awaited.
