Brig Amit Kumar Chand Reviews Training Infrastructure at 15 UP Battalion NCC in Prayagraj

Brigadier Amit Kumar Chand, SC, Deputy Director General (DDG), National Cadet Corps (NCC), Uttar Pradesh Directorate, visited 15 UP Battalion NCC at Prayagraj to review the unit’s training infrastructure, preparedness and the steps being taken to improve the cadet training environment.

The visit placed the spotlight on a battalion with a long institutional history. Brigadier Chand was briefed on the unit’s legacy, which is traced to the 1 UP Rifles Battalion established in 1917. That lineage gives the battalion more than a century of association with military and youth training traditions.

During the inspection, the DDG received an overview of the battalion’s development over the years, its training responsibilities and its role in shaping generations of NCC cadets. He also assessed the facilities available for routine training and for preparing cadets for different NCC camps.

Brigadier Chand inspected newly developed classrooms and training sheds at the battalion and appreciated the improvements made in the infrastructure. The upgraded facilities, he was told, have been created to support both theoretical instruction and practical training for cadets.

Classroom spaces of this kind are central to NCC instruction, where cadets are taught subjects such as military awareness, leadership, map reading, field craft, disaster management and social service. Better-equipped rooms also help ensure that training can be delivered in a more structured and organised way.

The training sheds were another point of appreciation during the visit. Such spaces allow practical activities to continue in a disciplined manner even when weather conditions are not favourable, making them especially useful when large groups of cadets are being trained for institutional activities and camps.

Brigadier Chand also noted the availability of ordnance stores at the battalion. The presence and proper management of training equipment are important for giving cadets practical exposure and for ensuring that the unit remains ready for scheduled training tasks and camps.

According to the assessment during the visit, these improvements have strengthened the training capability of 15 UP Battalion NCC and improved its readiness for NCC camps. Such camps are a major part of the NCC system, giving cadets exposure to disciplined community living, physical training, leadership exercises, structured activities and interaction with peers from different institutions and regions.

The NCC is designed to develop character, discipline, leadership, a secular outlook, adventure spirit and ideals of selfless service among young people. Through institutional training and camps, cadets are also encouraged to build confidence, teamwork and a stronger sense of responsibility.

Across Uttar Pradesh, NCC units work closely with schools and colleges to train cadets and prepare selected individuals for major camps and competitions. In that system, the quality of battalion-level infrastructure has a direct bearing on how effective and consistent the training can be.

Senior NCC officers regularly visit units to assess training standards, infrastructure and administrative preparedness, while also identifying areas where further improvements may be needed. Such visits also serve as an opportunity to guide units on strengthening their training programmes and maintaining required standards.

Brigadier Chand’s visit to 15 UP Battalion NCC highlighted both the battalion’s historic roots and its ongoing effort to modernise its training environment. The combination of upgraded classrooms, dedicated training sheds and ordnance stores gives the unit better support for preparing cadets for daily training and for NCC camps.

The battalion’s origin in the 1 UP Rifles Battalion in 1917 adds a distinctive historical dimension to its identity. The effort to preserve that legacy while improving present-day training facilities reflects the way the organisation has adapted to current NCC requirements.

The DDG’s appreciation of the battalion’s facilities and preparedness also acknowledged the work of its personnel in building an effective training ecosystem. The strengthened infrastructure is expected to support regular training and improve the battalion’s ability to prepare contingents for NCC camps and related activities.

The visit reaffirmed the Uttar Pradesh NCC Directorate’s focus on quality training, adequate infrastructure and institutional readiness as essential elements in shaping disciplined, confident and responsible young citizens through the National Cadet Corps.
