Army Hospital Achieves Milestone with First Robotic Laser Cataract Surgery Using ALLY System

On August 28, 2025, the Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR) marked a significant advancement in medical history by conducting the first-ever Robotic Custom Laser Cataract Surgery at a government institute in India. By doing so, AHRR has become the second institute in South Asia to adopt this advanced technology.
The surgery utilized the ALLY Adaptive Cataract Treatment System, signifying the Ophthalmology Department's successful foray into robotic, bladeless, and computer-guided eye surgery. This procedure represents the hospital's inaugural Femto-second Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery (FLACS), establishing a new standard in military healthcare.
The procedure was carried out by Brigadier SK Mishra on a 61-year-old patient. While traditional cataract surgery remains highly effective, FLACS presents a substantial technological advancement. The femtosecond laser automates essential tasks, such as corneal incisions, capsulotomy, and cataract fragmentation with micron-level precision, resulting in enhanced safety and improved outcomes.
This technological adoption underscores the Armed Forces' commitment to delivering cutting-edge, effective, and secure healthcare to its personnel and their families. The precision and dependability of FLACS are particularly valuable within the demanding context of military medicine.
The successful implementation of this advanced procedure was achieved under the leadership of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, and Director General Armed Forces Medical Services Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin. This milestone further enhances the Department of Ophthalmology at AHRR's longstanding reputation for clinical excellence and innovation in eye care.
