INS Trikand Successfully Thwarts Gulf of Aden Piracy Attempt on MV Golden Arsenal
During a swift and professional operation, the Indian Navy's frontline Talwar-class stealth frigate, INS Trikand, successfully intercepted a piracy attempt on the merchant vessel MV Golden Arsenal in the Gulf of Aden on the night of July 1, 2026. This event highlights the Indian Navy's ongoing commitment to maintaining vigilance and rapid response capabilities to protect crucial sea routes and ensure the safety of international shipping in the Indian Ocean Region.
Government sources reported that the St. Vincent and the Grenadines-flagged bulk carrier MV Golden Arsenal, transporting essential cargo to India, was threatened when suspected pirates attempted to board. The multinational crew, which included one Indian national, quickly sought refuge in the ship's citadel, a fortified safe room designed for such emergencies, and sent a distress signal through established emergency communication channels.
INS Trikand, on anti-piracy patrols in the Western Indian Ocean, responded promptly to the distress call by changing course and heading at high speed toward the threatened vessel. As the Indian Navy warship approached, the pirates abandoned their attempt and fled the scene without gaining control of the ship or harming the crew.
After the pirates withdrew, Indian Navy Marine Commandos (MARCOS) boarded MV Golden Arsenal to conduct a thorough sanitisation operation. The elite forces searched the vessel to ensure there were no hostile elements, confirmed the safety of the crew, and secured the ship. Medical checks revealed no injuries among the crew, and the vessel was cleared to continue its journey.

INS Trikand, a modern stealth frigate equipped with advanced sensors, weapons systems, and helicopter capabilities, is part of the Indian Navy's ongoing maritime security operations. This successful intervention follows a similar response by the same warship in mid-June 2026, when it deterred a suspected piracy attempt on another merchant vessel, MV Fareeda 5, in the Western Indian Ocean. For years, the Indian Navy has maintained a dedicated anti-piracy presence in the area, serving as a reliable first responder and security partner committed to protecting merchant shipping and ensuring freedom of navigation.
The Gulf of Aden is a strategically crucial chokepoint for global maritime trade, including energy supplies and essential goods vital to India's economic interests. The safe resolution of this incident without escalation demonstrates the effectiveness of the Indian Navy's proactive approach, precise coordination between surface assets and special forces, and its dedication to protecting Indian nationals and national interests at sea.
Indian Navy sources stressed that the timely intervention secured the safety of the vessel and its crew. The service continues to closely monitor the maritime domain and stands ready to address any threats to shipping in the Indian Ocean Region.
This operation once again underscores the professionalism, readiness, and operational reach of the Indian Navy in securing the seas for peaceful commerce.
