Wing Commander Mandeep Singh Dhillon: Honoring the Heroic IAF Pilot Who Sacrificed His Life in Arunachal Rescue Mission

Wing Commander Mandeep Singh Dhillon (Service No. 25307 F(P)) was a celebrated helicopter pilot in the Indian Air Force, noted for his outstanding bravery, professionalism, and dedication to humanitarian efforts. On July 4, 2017, he lost his life while leading a perilous rescue mission during severe floods and landslides in Arunachal Pradesh. His efforts not only rescued numerous civilians but also highlighted the Indian Air Force's enduring principle of placing service before self.

Originating from Patiala, Punjab, Wing Commander Dhillon belonged to a proud military family. As a second-generation air force officer, his father, Squadron Leader Puran Singh Dhillon (Retd.), served as a flight engineer on Mi-4 helicopters before becoming a national athletics coach. This background instilled in him a strong sense of discipline, resilience, and duty to the nation.

He commenced his education at the esteemed Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) in Dehradun, where he excelled academically and in sports, notably earning a gold medal in cross-country running. He later attended the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, as an Air Force cadet in Foxtrot Squadron. After rigorous training, he was commissioned into the Indian Air Force on December 19, 1998, choosing the helicopter stream in the flying branch.

Throughout nearly 20 years of service, Wing Commander Dhillon established an impressive operational record. He logged close to 4,000 flying hours, including over 1,200 captain hours on the Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv. His qualifications extended to being a Qualified Flying Instructor, Aircrew Examiner, and Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner. His operational experience covered varied and challenging terrains, from high-altitude Himalayan sectors to the dense jungles of the North-East.

He also made significant contributions to training and mentoring future officers. He served as a Divisional Officer at the National Defence Academy's Foxtrot Squadron on two occasions, shaping the careers of young cadets. In 2016–17, he assumed command of No. 115 Helicopter Unit, known as the “Hovering Angels,” stationed at Air Force Station Tezpur in Assam. The unit is specialized in counter-insurgency operations, internal security tasks, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions.

Wing Commander Dhillon earned widespread respect among peers and superiors for his leadership and eagerness to undertake challenging missions. Known as a “go-getter,” he volunteered for high-risk operations. In May 2016, he successfully evacuated 13 injured Indian Army personnel from the Tawang sector under extremely challenging weather and terrain conditions, demonstrating his skill and composure under pressure.

In early July 2017, heavy monsoon rains caused widespread destruction across Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Assam, leading to landslides and isolating remote villages. The No. 115 Helicopter Unit was assigned to carry out rescue and relief operations in these hard-to-reach areas. On July 4, 2017, Wing Commander Dhillon led a critical mission to evacuate stranded civilians from Sagalee village in Papum Pare district.

Along with co-pilot Flight Lieutenant Pramod Kumar Singh and Flight Gunner Sergeant R.Y. Gujjar, he conducted multiple sorties in an Advanced Light Helicopter despite rapidly worsening weather conditions. The crew successfully completed five sorties, rescuing over a hundred civilians and transporting them to safer locations near Naharlagun and Itanagar.

As conditions deteriorated further, the crew made a vital decision on their sixth sortie—not to carry additional civilians onboard, ensuring no lives were put at risk. The helicopter took off with only the three air warriors for the return journey. Shortly after departure, contact with air traffic control was lost. The wreckage was found the next day near Sopo Yuha village, approximately 30 kilometers from Itanagar, with all three crew members having tragically perished.

Earlier that morning, Wing Commander Dhillon made a personal sacrifice before entering the cockpit. Despite his daughter being ill and his family urging him to take her to the medical center, he chose to prioritize the rescue mission, illustrating the profound sense of duty that defined his life.

He is survived by his wife, Prabhpreet Kaur Dhillon, daughter Sehaj, and son Eshar. His wife, reflecting on their time together, described him as a compassionate and selfless person who always placed others' needs before his own. Affectionately known as “Mandy” among friends and colleagues, he was also an avid long-distance runner and a talented hockey player. Beyond his professional achievements, he actively engaged in community service, including langar seva at gurdwaras.

The Indian Air Force honored him with full military rites at his funeral in Tezpur. His sacrifice continues to be remembered and honored by the defense community, especially on occasions such as Balidan Diwas. The “Hovering Angels,” the unit he led, resumed operations shortly after the tragedy, continuing their mission of saving lives in some of the most challenging environments.

Wing Commander Mandeep Singh Dhillon's life serves as a powerful testament to courage, leadership, and humanity. By choosing to save others at great personal risk, he embodied the spirit of the Indian Air Force. His legacy endures, inspiring future generations of air warriors and reminding us of the silent sacrifices made by those who serve the nation.
