Vietnam Coast Guard Vice Commandant Luong Dinh Hung Visits Chennai to Boost Maritime Cooperation with India
The Indian Coast Guard on August 24, 2026, received Major General Luong Dinh Hung, Vice Commandant of the Vietnam Coast Guard, and a six-member delegation in Chennai, along with Vietnam Coast Guard Ship CSB 8002, in a visit aimed at deepening maritime cooperation between India and Vietnam.
The interaction brought senior representatives of the two coast guards together to exchange views on areas of common maritime interest and to build on the longstanding partnership between the two countries at sea. The discussions were centred on professional engagement, maritime security and ways to expand practical cooperation between the two services.
During the Chennai leg of the visit, the Vietnamese delegation met Inspector General Yoginder Dhaka, TM, Commander, Coast Guard Region (East). The meeting provided a forum for both sides to share perspectives on maritime security and consider avenues for closer cooperation between the Indian Coast Guard and the Vietnam Coast Guard.
The programme also included a visit to L&T Shipbuilding at Kattupalli. There, the delegation was introduced to India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities, including work underway at the yard and the wider technological ecosystem that supports the country’s maritime sector.
The shipyard visit also reflected India’s broader push to strengthen indigenous defence and maritime manufacturing. The development of Indian shipyards has become an important part of that effort, with growing capacity in the sector seen as relevant not only to national maritime security but also to cooperation with partner countries.
The visit by Major General Luong Dinh Hung and the Vietnam Coast Guard delegation comes against the backdrop of an expanding India-Vietnam maritime relationship. It also underlines the importance both sides attach to a secure, stable and rules-based maritime environment.
By combining official exchanges with an industrial visit, the engagement in Chennai reinforced the two coast guards’ commitment to more regular professional contact, stronger maritime cooperation and greater interoperability in support of shared interests at sea.
