Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns Due to Health Reasons

India's Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down from his role on Monday night, citing medical reasons. His resignation was handed over to President Droupadi Murmu coinciding with the start of the Monsoon session of Parliament.
Dhankhar, aged 74, recently underwent an angioplasty at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. His decision to resign comes three years into his tenure, which was originally scheduled to last until 2027.
In his resignation letter to the President, Dhankhar mentioned his decision was made to "prioritise health care and abide by medical advice," in line with Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.
He expressed his appreciation towards President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Council of Ministers, and the Members of Parliament for their support during his time in office.
"The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon'ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished and embedded in my memory," Dhankhar stated.
He also commented on India's progress during his tenure, describing it as a privilege to witness the nation's "remarkable economic progress" and "unprecedented exponential development."
Jagdeep Dhankhar took office as the country's 14th Vice President in August 2022. Alongside this role, he also served as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
His resignation is an unusual mid-term exit from the position, paving the way for a new Vice Presidential election in the upcoming months.
