Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar to Become Vice Chief of Naval Staff in June 2026

Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, currently holding the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), has been named the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS), effective from June 1, 2026.

Renowned as a proficient and highly esteemed Flag Officer, Vice Adm Kochhar is celebrated for his extensive operational, strategic, and leadership expertise in various aspects of naval operations and joint services command.

Throughout his illustrious career with the Indian Navy, he has undertaken numerous key roles, including serving as Commandant of the National Defence Academy, Chief of Staff of the Western Naval Command, and leading positions associated with aircraft carrier initiatives and warship production.

In his role as Commander-in-Chief of ANC, India’s sole integrated tri-services command, Vice Adm Kochhar has been instrumental in bolstering joint operational capabilities and enhancing India's strategic position in the Indian Ocean Region.

His upcoming role as VCNS is anticipated to further enhance the Indian Navy's operational readiness, modernization initiatives, and strategic objectives against the backdrop of evolving maritime security challenges.
