On May 29, 2026, Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, decorated with PVSM, AVSM, and NM honors, assumed the role of the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, marking a significant advancement in his esteemed naval career that spans over 37 years. Following his appointment, he paid tribute to the nation's martyrs with a floral wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi.

Vice Admiral Kochhar, an alumnus of the National Defence Academy in Pune, joined the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his exemplary service across various roles ranging from command and operational duties to training, acquisition, and strategic positions. Specializing in Gunnery and Missile Systems, he brings extensive operational experience and a record of leadership within the Navy’s important formations and platforms.

His career highlights include commanding the Indian Naval Ships Nashak, Vibhuti, and Kirpan. He also served as the Commissioning Commanding Officer of the frigate INS Trikand, a key warship of the Indian Navy. Additionally, he commanded the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya during its critical phase of air wing integration and operationalization, enhancing India’s maritime capabilities.

Vice Admiral Kochhar is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, the Naval War College in Goa, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the UK. His tenure at Naval Headquarters involved pivotal roles in policy and planning, including positions as Joint Director at Naval Plans, Director of Staff Requirements, and Principal Director of DSCT, where he was instrumental in capability development and strategic decision-making.

Upon his promotion to Flag Rank in 2018, he was appointed as Assistant Controller of Carrier Projects and Assistant Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, key positions in India's naval modernization efforts. His contributions in these roles were crucial to advancing the Navy's strategic goal of developing a modern and self-reliant maritime force.

In 2021, he assumed command of the Western Fleet, a key operational formation of the Indian Navy. Later, as Commandant of the National Defence Academy, he played a pivotal role in elevating training standards and upgrading infrastructure at the tri-service institution.

On May 25, 2024, Vice Admiral Kochhar took on the role of Chief of Staff, Western Naval Command, during a period of heightened security challenges in the Western Maritime Theatre. He led the Command’s strategic response to both conventional and unconventional threats along the Western Seaboard, highlighted by high-intensity operations during Operation Sindoor, showcasing the Navy’s readiness in maritime security.

For his exemplary leadership and outstanding service, Vice Admiral Kochhar was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022 and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2026. He has also been honored with the Nau Sena Medal, highlighting his significant contributions to the Navy.

Before his current appointment, he served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command, India’s exclusive tri-service command, where he was instrumental in enhancing operational coordination and jointness among the services, bolstering India's security in the eastern Indian Ocean region.

As Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar steps into his role during a period of rapid expansion and modernization of the Indian Navy, which is strengthening its presence in the Indo-Pacific. His extensive experience in carrier operations, fleet command, warship acquisition, and strategic planning will be pivotal in guiding the Navy’s future direction.

Vice Admiral Kochhar is married to Mrs. Reyman, an artist involved in advertising and education. They have two children, with their daughter Sabah working as a freelance journalist and their son Karan employed at a financial consultancy.
