U.S. Successfully Retrieves Downed F-15E Airman from Iran in Complex Rescue Operation Involving Firefight
Washington, D.C. — President Donald J. Trump announced on Sunday that the U.S. military has successfully rescued the second crew member of an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet, which had been downed in Iranian territory. The high-stakes combat search-and-rescue operation unfolded in the midst of the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, involving numerous aircraft, hundreds of special operations forces, and an intense firefight with Iranian military personnel.
The F-15E, from the 494th Fighter Squadron (Black Panthers) stationed at RAF Lakenheath, was shot down over Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran near the Karoon River on Friday. Both the pilot and the weapons systems officer (WSO)—a Colonel held in high regard—managed to eject safely. While the pilot was rescued shortly after the crash, the WSO evaded capture for 24 to 48 hours as Iranian forces searched for him in the surrounding mountainous area.
Directed by the President, U.S. forces embarked on an extensive combat search-and-rescue (CSAR) mission, which involved deploying numerous aircraft and special forces teams. The operation culminated in a significant engagement with Iranian forces during the extraction. The second crew member was found and extracted alive early Sunday morning. Although both airmen suffered injuries, they are reported to be in stable condition and are expected to recover fully. The mission did not result in any U.S. casualties.
President Trump expressed his satisfaction on Truth Social, stating: “WE GOT HIM! My fellow Americans, over the past several hours, the United States Military pulled off one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History, for one of our incredible Crew Member Officers, who also happens to be a highly respected Colonel, and who I am thrilled to let you know is now SAFE and SOUND!” He further added, “At my direction, the U.S. Military sent dozens of aircraft, armed with the most lethal weapons in the World, to retrieve him. He sustained injuries, but he will be just fine. WE WILL NEVER LEAVE AN AMERICAN WARFIGHTER BEHIND!”
The rescue comes amid intensified military activities under Operation Epic Fury, initiated in late February. Iran has acknowledged shooting down the aircraft and had deployed resources to find the missing crew member. This incident marks the first confirmed loss of a U.S. manned combat aircraft on Iranian soil since the current conflict phase began.

Experts have hailed the operation as a testament to the U.S. special operations forces' capabilities in hostile environments, highlighting their reliance on precise intelligence, rapid mobilization, and coordinated air support. Details about any additional support assets, such as temporary forward positions or the destruction of grounded C-130 aircraft, remain sparse due to security measures.
The incident takes place amid a broader Middle East crisis, with coalition airstrikes targeting Iranian infrastructure and continued retaliatory actions. The identities of the crew members have not been disclosed for security reasons, and both are receiving medical treatment at a confidential location.
This successful rescue is likely to enhance morale among U.S. and allied forces and underscores the ongoing risks faced by aircrews operating in the region. While diplomatic efforts for de-escalation are active, no immediate ceasefire has been declared.
