Manipur Security Forces Seize 15.35 Kg of Opium in Fake Army Vehicle Bust

In a substantial anti-narcotics operation on Sunday morning, joint security forces in Manipur's Senapati district apprehended a Toyota Innova carrying fake Indian Army markings and seized 15.35 kilograms of suspected opium hidden in a secret compartment. The driver, identified as Tarkeshwar Singh, 45, from Hijuguri Gaon in Tinsukia district, Assam, was arrested at the scene.

The operation unfolded around 9:00 a.m. during standard checks at the T. Khullen checkpoint. A coordinated team, including the Senapati Police's Special Operations Team, D-78 CRPF, B-109 Quick Action Team CRPF, and 16 Assam Rifles, executed the operation under the oversight of Senapati Superintendent of Police Zaib Shaikh, IPS. The arrest was officially recorded in the presence of an Executive Magistrate.

The vehicle, which bore an Assam registration number AS23AK5541, traveled unaccompanied despite displaying conspicuous military symbols. It was equipped with a VIP flag post and insignia mimicking those of an Army Brigadier, featuring a one-star plate. Inside, a reversible nameplate read “ARMY” on one side and “MINISTRY OF DEFENCE” on the other.

Security officers became suspicious of the vehicle's military-style emblems, which were not backed by any official documentation or escort. Initial checks confirmed no legitimate connection between the vehicle or the driver and the Indian Army. The markings and nameplate appeared to be a deliberate attempt to feign official status and bypass checkpoint scrutiny.

Upon conducting a detailed search, authorities found 17 packets of suspected opium, totaling approximately 15.35 kg, including packaging, concealed in a custom-built compartment beneath the vehicle’s body near the rear right door. Other confiscated items included two mobile phones, a black wallet containing ₹5,000, a PAN card, a Voter Identity Card, the vehicle and its keys, and the deceptive nameplate.

A case has been filed at the Senapati Police Station under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigations are ongoing to trace the source and intended destination of the opium as well as to identify any larger smuggling network involved.

This incident underscores ongoing challenges in Manipur’s Senapati district, which has seen multiple drug seizures recently amid the broader narcotics trafficking issues linked to its proximity to international boundaries. The use of counterfeit military insignia to transport contraband marks a strategic attempt to exploit the authority and respect associated with the military. Such impersonation not only compromises security measures but also sullies the reputation of the Indian Army.

Security forces in the region are maintaining heightened alertness through joint operations involving state police and central paramilitary units. This recent seizure highlights the success of coordinated check regimes in thwarting smuggling operations, even when deceptive measures are employed by the smugglers.

The detained individual remains in custody as investigations continue. Authorities have not dismissed the potential for additional arrests related to the trafficking chain.
