Meet General Dhiraj Seth: Son of a General Who Rose to Become India’s 31st Army Chief

When General Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, formally assumed charge as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff on 30 June 2026, it was more than a routine change of guard at the helm of the Indian Army. It represented the pinnacle of a distinguished military lineage — the rise of a second-generation officer whose journey embodies the enduring values of service, discipline, leadership, and professional excellence passed down through generations.

General Dhiraj Seth is the son of Lieutenant General (Retd) Krishna Mohan Seth, PVSM, AVSM, a highly respected officer who retired as the Adjutant General of the Indian Army in December 1997 after a stellar career that included commanding the prestigious Sudarshan Chakra Corps (XXI Corps) — the very formation his son would later lead. In a rare and historic parallel, both father and son have commanded this elite strike corps based in Bhopal, one of the Indian Army’s premier offensive formations oriented towards the Western Front.

A Family Steeped in Military Tradition

Lieutenant General Krishna Mohan Seth was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery. He commanded the 17 (Parachute) Field Regiment and went on to lead XXI Strike Corps from October 1992 to October 1994. He subsequently commanded III Corps in Nagaland during a critical period of counter-insurgency operations. His exemplary service earned him the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal. After retirement, he served as Governor of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Tripura, continuing his contribution to national service in a civil capacity.

The Seth family’s commitment to the armed forces extends across services. General Dhiraj Seth’s younger brother, Rear Admiral Ravnish Seth, is a serving flag officer in the Indian Navy. This multi-service legacy underscores a household where the uniform and the call of duty were everyday realities.

Growing up in such an environment, young Dhiraj Seth imbibed the core values that define an Indian Army officer — integrity, selfless service, and an unwavering commitment to the nation. The influence of his father’s illustrious career provided both inspiration and a profound sense of responsibility.

From NDA to the Pinnacle: A Merit-Driven Ascent

General Dhiraj Seth joined the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, and was commissioned into the Armoured Corps — the 2nd Lancers (Gardner’s Horse) — on 20 December 1986. Unlike his father’s Artillery background, he chose the mechanised domain, yet the arc of his career would echo his father’s in commanding the same strike corps decades later.

His rise through the ranks was marked by consistent excellence. He commanded an Armoured Regiment (including Skinner’s Horse), 98 Armoured Brigade, and Uniform Force — a counter-insurgency formation in Jammu & Kashmir. He served in diverse operational theatres and held critical staff appointments at Army Headquarters, including in Perspective Planning and as Additional Director General Weapons and Equipment. These roles honed his understanding of capability development and force modernisation.

A standout moment came on 31 July 2021, when Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth took command of XXI Corps (Sudarshan Chakra Corps) — the same formation his father had led nearly three decades earlier. This rare father-son command of one of the Army’s most potent strike formations remains a unique distinction in the institution’s history.

He subsequently served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, before being elevated to Army Commander. He commanded both South Western Command and Southern Command — earning the rare distinction of leading two operational Army Commands. For his outstanding leadership as Southern Army Commander during Operation Sindoor, he was awarded the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal in 2026. He assumed the appointment of Vice Chief of the Army Staff on 1 April 2026 before taking over as Chief of the Army Staff on 30 June 2026.

Professional Excellence and Intellectual Rigour

General Seth’s career reflects not only operational acumen but also intellectual depth. An alumnus of the Defence Services Staff College (where he was adjudged the best all-round student), Army War College, and National Defence College, he also attended the Command & Staff Course in France and the International Defense Acquisition Management Course in the United States. He served with the United Nations Angola Verification Mission III as an operations officer.

These experiences shaped a leader with a broad strategic outlook, deeply attuned to the demands of modern, technology-enabled warfare and the imperatives of Atmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.

Personal Life: Grounded in Values

Away from the uniform, General Dhiraj Seth is married to Mrs Komal Seth. The couple has two daughters. He is known to be an avid sportsman, excelling in tennis and golf — pursuits that reflect the discipline and focus that have defined his professional life.

A Legacy That Inspires

General Dhiraj Seth’s journey is a powerful reminder that while family legacy may open doors of opportunity and provide invaluable guidance, it is individual merit, relentless hard work, and exemplary leadership that ultimately determine success in the Indian Armed Forces. His story resonates deeply with defence aspirants preparing for NDA, CDS, AFCAT, and SSB interviews — illustrating the officer-like qualities of initiative, integrity, and dedication that the Services seek.

As he leads the Indian Army into a new era marked by rapid technological change, multi-domain operations, and the push for greater self-reliance, General Dhiraj Seth carries forward not only his own distinguished record but also the proud legacy of a family that has given generations of service to the nation.

The rise of General Dhiraj Seth as India’s 31st Chief of the Army Staff stands as a testament to the timeless values of the Indian military — service before self, professional competence, and an unbreakable bond between the soldier and the soil he defends. The nation and the Army extend their warmest congratulations and best wishes for a tenure defined by vision, strength, and continued excellence.
