Tripura BSF Jawan Premjay Sarkar Dies of Cardiac Arrest on Duty in Delhi

A Border Security Force jawan from Tripura, Premjay Sarkar, died of cardiac arrest while on duty in Delhi, according to local reports. His mortal remains were brought to Agartala, where he was accorded a guard of honour before being taken to his native village in West Tripura.

Reports identified Sarkar as the son of Rabindra Sarkar and a resident of Rangutia village under the Bamutia Assembly constituency. He had joined the BSF on 1 June 2011 and was serving with the 40th Battalion, posted at the BSF headquarters in Delhi.

Tripura Info reported on 6 October 2026 that Sarkar collapsed late on Sunday night, around midnight, after going to the toilet while on duty. Fellow personnel shifted him to the BSF hospital inside the complex, where doctors declared him brought dead. The report said the cause of death was a massive cardiac arrest.

The same account noted that the night of his death coincided with the birthday of his younger daughter, Priyangshi, which was being observed at the family’s rented home in Agartala. According to the report, Sarkar had spoken to his wife and daughters earlier that evening and told them he would return home on leave during Durga Puja.

He is survived by his wife, Madhavi Das, whom he married in 2016, and their two daughters. The family lives in a rented house in Agartala. A later report by Tripura Times on 7 October also named his parents, an elder brother and three sisters among the survivors, and said the daughters were aged between four and seven.

There were differences in the reported timeline. Tripura Info said the body reached Agartala on the morning of 6 October. Tripura Times, published the following day, said he fell ill on Tuesday, was taken to hospital and declared dead, and that the body was flown to Agartala Airport on Wednesday morning. That report also said local youths organised a spontaneous bike rally from the airport to Rangutia, and that the BSF completed formalities and accorded a guard of honour. Tripura Times gave his age as 36 and spelled his name as Premjoy Sarkar. Neither report carried an official BSF statement.

Residents of Rangutia said the village was left shaken by the death. Prayers were offered for the deceased jawan, who had completed about 15 years of service.
