Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Two Indian Soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh
Two Indian Army personnel tragically lost their lives when their military vehicle plunged into a deep ditch in Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Subansiri district, near the India-China border. The incident underscores the challenges and risks faced by soldiers operating in remote frontier regions with difficult terrain.
The accident occurred on March 7 near Reddi village. The vehicle was en route from Gelemo to Taksing as part of Operation Snow Leopard, a strategic effort to maintain vigilance along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) amid ongoing tensions with China. Defence officials reported that the fall resulted in the immediate deaths of two occupants, while the driver sustained minor injuries.
The deceased were identified as Naib Subedar Kulwant Singh of the 908 Field Regiment, 56 Artillery Brigade, and Naik Pradeep Kumar Sharma of the 18 Sikh Regiment. Naik Sharma, hailing from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, was recognized for his dedicated service in infantry operations. Their bodies were recovered swiftly by fellow personnel at the scene of the accident.
The driver, Amarjeet Gujjar from the 908 Field Regiment, survived with minor injuries and was transported to the Field Hospital at Borarupak for treatment. Officials stated that he is stable and not in danger, receiving medical attention for recovery.
Upper Subansiri district, known for its rugged mountainous landscape and unpredictable weather, presents logistical challenges for military operations. It is part of India's eastern sector along the LAC, where troops are regularly stationed for patrolling and surveillance under operations like Operation Snow Leopard, initiated in response to increased border activities since 2020. Defence officials highlighted that while such accidents are rare, they highlight the dangers of serving in high-altitude, remote areas with limited and hazardous road infrastructure.
The Army has launched an internal investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident, with preliminary suggestions pointing to factors like slippery roads or mechanical issues. However, no definitive conclusions have been drawn yet. The Army has expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers and promised full support, including ex-gratia payments and other entitlements according to service protocols.
This incident serves as a somber reminder of the sacrifices made by India's armed forces in protecting the nation's borders. Tributes have been paid by military colleagues and local communities, honoring the bravery and dedication of Naib Subedar Singh and Naik Sharma.
