Tata Advanced Systems to Upgrade Indian Army's Pinaka Rocket Systems
Tata Advanced Systems has been awarded a significant contract by the Indian Army to overhaul and upgrade first-generation Pinaka Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS) along with Battery Command Posts (BCPs). This initiative aims to enhance the long-term operational readiness of one of the Army's critical artillery systems.
The official supply order was presented to Tata Advanced Systems during a ceremony in the national capital. Under this agreement, the company will assist the Indian Army’s 510 Advance Base Workshop (ABW) in upgrading the Pinaka systems currently in service to ensure their sustained availability, reliability, and optimal battlefield performance.
Phased Overhaul Programme
Initially, Tata Advanced Systems and 510 ABW will collaboratively conduct a pilot overhaul of selected Pinaka MLRS and BCPs. Depending on the outcomes of this initial phase, 510 ABW of the Corps of EME will proceed with overhauling the remaining systems, with Tata Advanced Systems supplying essential spares, quality assurance, and technical support.
This programme will capitalize on Tata Advanced Systems' extensive technical knowledge, access to certified spare parts, and close collaboration with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). This approach is designed to ensure minimal downtime and provide enhanced lifecycle support for the Pinaka fleet.
Indigenous Artillery Backbone
The Pinaka MLRS, developed in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation, has become a central component of India’s rocket artillery capabilities. Tata Advanced Systems highlighted that the system now incorporates nearly 80% indigenous content, demonstrating significant self-reliance and strategic autonomy consistent with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
A substantial number of Pinaka launchers provided by Tata Advanced Systems are already in operational use with the Indian Army, reflecting the company's expanding influence in land combat systems.
Combat-Proven Capabilities
The Pinaka MLRS is designed as an all-weather, indirect-fire artillery weapon, capable of delivering high-volume precision fire against crucial targets. It is mounted on an 8×8 high-mobility vehicle and includes an automated shoot-and-scoot capability, allowing for rapid deployment, improved survivability, and effective operations across diverse and challenging terrains.
Strategic Significance
The planned overhaul and upgradation programme is set to extend the service life, enhance reliability, and maintain the combat effectiveness of the first-generation Pinaka systems, ensuring their readiness in the face of changing operational demands. This order highlights the Indian Army's trust in domestic industry and affirms Tata Advanced Systems’ role as a pivotal partner in India’s artillery modernization and indigenization efforts.
