Shaurya Chakra Awardee Lt Cdr Roopa A Inspires Students at NHO Dehradun With 238-Day Sea Circumnavigation
Dehradun, October 5, 2026: The National Hydrographic Office (NHO), Dehradun, on Monday hosted Shaurya Chakra awardee Lieutenant Commander Roopa A for a motivational interaction with naval personnel, civilian staff and students from schools and colleges.
Lt Cdr Roopa A, one of only two women officers across the three Armed Forces to receive the Shaurya Chakra, spoke about her 238-day circumnavigation of the globe by sea and the demanding conditions she faced during the voyage.
She described the long journey as one shaped by courage, endurance, uncertainty and determination as she sailed across the world’s oceans. Her account offered the audience a close look at the physical and mental resilience needed for such an expedition, along with the importance of leadership, teamwork, perseverance and staying composed in difficult and unpredictable situations at sea.

The session was attended by NHO Dehradun’s naval and civilian staff, along with students from various schools and colleges. Her experiences were presented as especially encouraging for young participants, many of whom were urged to approach challenges with confidence and determination.
The interaction also highlighted how lessons from demanding military and maritime expeditions can help inspire young people to build resilience, leadership qualities and perseverance in their own lives.

Lt Cdr Roopa’s journey, and her recognition with the Shaurya Chakra, were presented as an example of courage and determination, particularly for young women aspiring to take up challenging careers and leadership roles.
