Security Forces Conduct Significant Counter-Terrorism Operation in Shopian District

A significant counter-terrorism operation is currently in progress in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. This was initiated following the sighting of two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists in an orchard, prompting immediate action from security forces.

The operation commenced after surveillance footage revealed the presence of the two individuals, identified as Latif and Zakir, within the orchard area. In response, a collective force comprising the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) swiftly surrounded the location.

Authorities have blocked all potential escape routes while systematically searching seven nearby villages. As of the latest updates, four villages have been thoroughly examined, with the operation still ongoing.

Officials reported that the suspects fired at the security forces once they were cornered, resulting in a gunfight. Efforts to neutralize the militants are continuing as the operation progresses.

The two individuals are reportedly from Kulgam district. Zakir is thought to have joined Lashkar-e-Taiba in 2024, followed by Latif in 2025.

Shopian is considered a strategically important area due to its dense orchards and forested regions, which terrorists have historically used as transit routes between South Kashmir, Central Kashmir, and the Pir Panjal region. Security agencies emphasize the importance of ongoing operations to dismantle local militant networks and impede further recruitment efforts within the Valley.
