School of Artillery, IIT Jammu sign MoA for M.Tech degrees for student officers

The School of Artillery, Deolali, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) that will allow student officers of the Long Gunnery Staff Course to pursue M.Tech degrees while working on technology projects linked to Indian Army requirements.

The agreement was signed on October 1, 2026, by Brigadier Virender Singh of the School of Artillery and Dr Manoj Singh Gaur, Director, IIT Jammu. The collaboration is designed to combine the operational experience of Army officers with the academic and technical capabilities of the IIT.

Under the arrangement, student officers will undertake Technology Readiness Level (TRL)-based projects in partnership with IIT Jammu. The projects are intended to focus on practical technical problems and operational needs faced by the Indian Army, giving the officers an opportunity to apply their military understanding to structured research work.

The TRL-based framework is meant to ensure that the projects are not purely academic exercises, but are connected to real-world application and development. Through the collaboration, officers undergoing the Long Gunnery Staff Course will be able to work on technology-oriented projects with guidance from IIT Jammu faculty and resources.

According to the information shared, the initiative will create an academic platform where military requirements can be integrated with technical research. The aim is to encourage solutions that are relevant to the Indian Army while also promoting research, innovation and the development of indigenous technology.

The MoA also broadens the scope of the Long Gunnery Staff Course by adding a formal academic pathway for student officers to earn M.Tech degrees. By linking a premier Army training institution with an IIT, the agreement provides a structured route for advanced study alongside project work focused on military and operational needs.

The collaboration is expected to bring together field experience and academic expertise in a way that supports indigenous technology development. The emphasis on real-world challenges and operational requirements is central to the partnership’s stated objective of producing practical outcomes for the armed forces.
