Russia to Collaborate in India's Sudarshan Chakra Defence Project, Strengthening Energy and Trade Relations

Russia has shown its willingness to join forces with India on the Sudarshan Chakra project, a next-generation air defence system announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech. This collaboration emphasizes Moscow's aim to maintain its pivotal role in India's defence sector, even as New Delhi pushes forward with its Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative to boost self-reliance.
The Russian Charge d’Affaires confirmed that the project's development is likely to integrate Russian technology and expertise, reinforcing the enduring military ties between the two countries. This cooperation is perceived as an extension of previous joint projects like the BrahMos missile program, which underscores the strategic trust between India and Russia.
Energy Cooperation and US Criticism
In addition to defence, Russia remains India's leading energy partner. Russian diplomat Babushkin criticized the United States for trying to pressure India into reducing its imports of Russian crude oil, describing the U.S. stance as “unjustified” and “neo-colonial.”
India, on its part, has defended its decision to continue purchasing discounted Russian crude oil, citing factors like affordability and security of supply. This approach has enabled India to shield its economy from fluctuating global oil prices. Consequently, Russia's share of India's oil imports surged from a mere 1.7% in 2019–20 to 35.1% in 2024–25, positioning Moscow as India's largest crude supplier.
Despite the U.S. imposing 25% tariffs on Indian goods due to its energy relationship with Russia, it has not taken similar action against China, which remains the largest buyer of Russian oil. This disparity has been highlighted by analysts in both New Delhi and Moscow as indicative of a double standard in Washington's policy.
Strategic Roadmap to $100 Billion Trade
Looking ahead, India and Russia aim to achieve $100 billion in bilateral trade by 2030, with plans to broaden their cooperation beyond hydrocarbons. Russian officials have proposed that India could turn to Russian markets to mitigate reduced access to Western economies resulting from tariffs and restrictions.
This strategy aligns with India's long-term goals to diversify its trade portfolio, strengthen supply chains, and achieve greater strategic autonomy.
Balancing Geopolitics
The Sudarshan Chakra project symbolizes more than an air defence system for India; it represents the country's independent foreign policy, where its defence and economic ties with Russia coexist alongside increasing engagements with Western nations.
Despite ongoing geopolitical pressures, India and Russia continue to strengthen their partnership in defence, energy, and trade sectors. For India, this ensures security and cost-effectiveness; for Russia, it reasserts its relevance as a key global player pivoting towards the East in response to Western sanctions.
