Russia Assesses Financial Viability of Producing Su-57 Fighter Jets in India

Russia has initiated an evaluation to determine the financial investment needed for the production of its Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets in India, according to defense sources who spoke with ANI. This development emerges as India intensifies its strategic partnership with Russia, amid the United States' efforts to promote its F-35 aircraft and ongoing trade discussions with New Delhi.

Sources indicate that India has expressed interest in acquiring at least two to three squadrons of these advanced fighters, considering both the Russian Su-57 and the American F-35 as options. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which currently produces the Su-30MKI under license at its Nashik plant, might be utilized for the local assembly of the Su-57. Additionally, other Indian defense manufacturing units involved in producing Russian-origin systems could participate in this initiative, potentially leading to cost reductions.

Moscow has consistently encouraged New Delhi to contemplate the Su-57 and may revive discussions regarding the previous joint fifth-generation fighter aircraft project that India exited nearly ten years ago. These renewed talks are particularly relevant amidst the shifting global dynamics and increasing security concerns.

Concurrently, India is advancing its own domestic fifth-generation fighter jet program, which received government approval in 2024. The first prototype's maiden flight is anticipated by 2028, with full induction slated for 2035.
