At an age when many students are just beginning to explore their future career paths, 17-year-old Riddhi Chauhan is already leading a group of approximately 300 cadets and preparing for a career as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy. The Indian-American student from Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Queens, New York, holds the position of Battalion Commanding Officer within her school's Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC), the highest student leadership role in the program.

Recently, Riddhi achieved a significant milestone by securing admission to the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), which brings her a step closer to her dream of joining the United States Naval Academy and serving as a commissioned officer in the US Navy.

Riddhi's journey through the NJROTC program has been marked by years of dedication, leadership, and academic success. Initially joining the program to boost her self-confidence and leadership skills as a freshman, she has since developed a strong commitment to military service.

Currently, Riddhi is responsible for overseeing the operations of one of the country's notable NJROTC battalions. Her duties include supervising training sessions, mentoring junior cadets, and managing the activities of nearly 300 students. Her leadership extends beyond ceremonial roles, demanding detailed planning, effective communication, and the ability to lead by example.

Riddhi maintains a demanding schedule, arriving at school before 7 a.m. four days a week for drill practice before academic classes. This discipline reflects the rigor and commitment required by military leadership programs designed to groom future officers and leaders.

The NJROTC program, sponsored by the United States Navy, emphasizes the development of leadership, discipline, teamwork, citizenship, and character among high school students across the nation. For Riddhi, it has laid the groundwork for her long-term commitment to military service and leadership.

Her appointment as Battalion Commanding Officer is the result of years of consistent effort and leadership development. Before reaching this top student leadership position, she held several key roles, including Academic Commander, STEM Commander, Platoon Leader, and Inspection Commander.

As Academic Commander, Riddhi played a crucial role in advancing her school's team to the second round of the Leadership and Academic Bowl for two consecutive years. She also helped her battalion achieve first place in a national academic examination, demonstrating both her academic prowess and team leadership skills.

During her time as STEM Commander, Riddhi guided the battalion in constructing its first SeaPerch underwater robot, offering cadets practical experience in engineering and problem-solving. The project underscored her ability to merge technical innovation with collaborative leadership.

Mentorship has been a cornerstone of Riddhi's leadership approach. Throughout her journey, she has mentored over 200 cadets, helping them build confidence, discipline, and leadership skills vital for both military and civilian careers. Her leadership philosophy prioritizes service, personal growth, and empowering others to reach their potential.

Riddhi's leadership style is defined by service and responsibility towards others rather than rank or authority. She attributes her perspective to both the NJROTC program and her upbringing. The teachings of Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, along with her involvement in the organization's youth programs, have instilled values of humility, compassion, and selfless service in her from an early age.

These principles have guided her through challenging leadership roles and rigorous training experiences, such as Sail Training in Newport, Rhode Island. Reflecting on her experiences, Riddhi acknowledges that the program taught her to remain calm under pressure, maintain consistency, and adapt to new challenges with resilience.

Her admission to the Naval Academy Preparatory School signifies another achievement in her military ambitions. The institution prepares select candidates for admission to the United States Naval Academy, a leading military academy responsible for training future Navy and Marine Corps officers.

Riddhi is the daughter of Ruchika and Dilip Chauhan, whose family hails from Jaipur, Rajasthan, before moving to New York. Her sister, Kahini Gupta Chauhan, is pursuing a career in medicine, showcasing the family's strong emphasis on education and professional success.

At just 17, Riddhi Chauhan has already distinguished herself as a capable student leader, commanding hundreds of cadets, mentoring future leaders, and securing a place on a prestigious path toward military service in the United States.
