Retired Veteran Honors Martyred Son by Wearing Army Uniform at Punjab Farewell

In Punjab, a heart-wrenching moment unfolded as Dalvir Singh, a retired Subedar Major of the 56 Armoured Regiment, donned his Army uniform to pay his last respects to his son, Sowar Jobanjeet Singh. The young soldier was among 10 Indian Army personnel who lost their lives in a tragic road accident in Doda.

Sowar Jobanjeet Singh, who was serving with the 8 Cavalry, died in this unfortunate Army vehicle accident in the Doda sector. He was just 23 years old, with his wedding planned for March 1, and all preparations had been completed.

During the funeral procession, attended by thousands, Subedar Major Dalvir Singh stood in his uniform, saluting his son with solemn dignity. With a voice filled with emotion yet underlined with strength, he remarked, “Sher tha, sher nu lae gaye” (He was a lion, and a lion has been taken away).

Despite the overwhelming grief, the retired soldier encouraged family and villagers to refrain from tears. “Do not cry. Stay in high spirits. He was a lion,” he stated, embodying the soldier’s creed—honour over sorrow, duty over self.

The image of a father, a veteran himself, saluting his fallen son stood as a powerful emblem of Punjab’s steadfast military legacy, where bravery and sacrifice are handed down through generations.

Jobanjeet Singh’s death, coming just weeks before he was to start a new chapter in life, has cast a shadow of mourning over the region. Yet, the strength displayed by his father has resonated nationwide, serving as a poignant testament to the resilience of soldiers’ families and the silent sacrifices that underpin the nation’s security.

As mourners chanted “Shaheed Jobanjeet Singh Amar Rahe,” the farewell transcended grief, becoming a tribute of pride—a courageous father honouring his courageous son.
