Retired Brigadier VK Joshi Killed by Stray Bullet Amid Road-Rage Shooting in Dehradun

Dehradun, March 30, 2026 – A tragic incident in Uttarakhand has sparked widespread concern after a retired Indian Army Brigadier, VK Joshi, aged 70, was killed by a stray bullet during his regular morning walk in Dehradun's Rajpur area on Monday. The shooting incident took place between 6:45 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. near Tula Apartments in Johri village, located along the Dehradun-Mussoorie Road, within the jurisdiction of the Rajpur Police Station.

Police reports indicate that the fatal event occurred amid a violent road-rage altercation involving occupants of two vehicles. The conflict, which reportedly started over an overtaking issue, quickly escalated into a shootout. Brigadier Joshi, an innocent passerby with no involvement in the dispute, was hit by a stray bullet, resulting in his immediate death. As a resident of the Rajpur area, he was on his customary morning walk at the time.

Dehradun SP City Pramod Kumar addressed the media, confirming the details in a self-recorded video statement. He explained that the gunfire erupted following a heated argument between individuals in two vehicles on the Dehradun-Mussoorie Road. "One person was injured in the incident and taken to the hospital. We have now been informed that he has died during treatment," the SP clarified, identifying the victim as Brigadier VK Joshi.

The police have cordoned off the area and initiated a district-wide search for those responsible for the shooting. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity and have discovered a vehicle with broken windows believed to be connected to the incident. The assailants allegedly abandoned one of the vehicles and fled the scene. No arrests have been made thus far, and the investigation is ongoing.

Brigadier VK Joshi, a distinguished former member of the Indian Army, is survived by his family. However, pertinent details about his military service, such as his regiment, years of service, or significant achievements, are currently unavailable as the news has only recently emerged. His family has not yet released any public statements.

The incident has raised serious concerns about road rage and the reckless use of firearms in urban and semi-urban environments. Local residents expressed shock and called for immediate action to safeguard morning walkers and commuters in the typically peaceful Rajpur locality. Senior police officials have pledged a comprehensive investigation and have urged the public to provide any information that could help in identifying those responsible.

Further details on the case, including post-mortem reports and potential arrests, are anticipated as Uttarakhand Police intensify their efforts. This remains a developing story.
