Retired Army Jawan Among Two Arrested in Assam for Allegedly Sharing Army Movement Details With Pakistan
Guwahati, October 5, 2026: Assam Police have arrested two men, including a retired Army jawan who is currently re-employed on a contractual basis, on allegations that they passed information about Army movements to a Pakistani intelligence operative. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the arrests were made after inputs from central agencies.
Addressing reporters in Guwahati on Sunday, Sarma said the police action came after intelligence shared by central agencies. “Today, as per input of central agencies, the Assam Police arrested two persons. One is a retired army jawan but currently working on a contractual basis with the army,” he said. “It has been alleged that they were in touch with Pakistan and were giving information about army movement. We will hand them over to the central agencies.”
The Chief Minister said preliminary inputs suggested that both men may have been honey-trapped by those seeking to obtain the information. Some reports quoting him stated that the honey-trap operated through online sex rackets. Sarma said the investigation would unfold further. The identity of the retired jawan has not been disclosed, and senior police officers have not shared additional details on him, citing the sensitivity of the probe.
Police identify one accused
In a separate statement, Assam Police identified one of the arrested men as Abhishek Kumar Singh, also referred to as Abhishek Kr Singh, a 31-year-old from Purba Champaran district in Bihar. He was staying in a rented house in Guwahati at the time of the arrest.
According to police, the case began with a preliminary input from the Military Intelligence of the Tezpur-based Gajraj Corps. That information was then developed further by the Special Task Force in coordination with Sonitpur police. Investigators said Singh was suspected of anti-national activities under the instructions of a Pakistani intelligence operative, including the transfer of secret information related to security forces.
The STF carried out an operation during the intervening night of October 3 and 4 and apprehended him from a rented house in Gandhinagar under Satgaon police station limits. Police said a mobile phone, SIM cards and other documents described as incriminating were recovered during the search. Further investigation is continuing, including attempts to determine how long Singh may have been in contact with Pakistan-based operatives.
Case handed to central agencies
Sarma said both accused would be handed over to central agencies. Police have not disclosed the specific nature of the information allegedly shared, the method of communication, or the identity of the handler, describing the matter as sensitive.
The arrests add to a series of espionage-related cases in the Northeast linked to alleged contact with Pakistani intelligence networks, including earlier cases involving defence personnel and civilians accused of passing on information related to troop movement and deployment. Authorities have not said whether the alleged activity in the present case caused any operational compromise.
