Rear Admiral Srinivas Maddula Assumes Command of Indian Navy's Western Fleet
Mumbai, July 30: Rear Admiral Srinivas Maddula has taken command of the Indian Navy's Western Fleet, following Vice Admiral Vivek Dahiya's tenure. This transition, occurring during a Change of Guard ceremony on July 27, 2026, signifies a pivotal leadership shift in one of the Navy's foremost operational divisions, famously referred to as the "Sword Arm" due to its crucial role in defending India's maritime interests.
Rear Admiral Maddula possesses a wealth of operational, command, and staff experience accumulated over several decades of notable naval service. A graduate of the National Defence Academy, he has furthered his military education at the United States Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Virginia and the Indian Naval War College in Goa.
Throughout his illustrious career, Maddula has commanded various key naval vessels both at sea and onshore. His command experience includes leading INS Nipat, INS Ganga, INS Godavari, and the stealth frigate INS Trikand, equipping him with extensive leadership skills and experience across varied operational settings.
He has also overseen operations at INS Kadamba, the Navy's strategically vital base depot ship, and led INFACT 80, reinforcing his capabilities in logistics, fleet support, and operational management.
Upon his elevation to Flag Rank, Rear Admiral Maddula served as the Flag Officer Sea Training under the Southern Naval Command in Kochi, responsible for operational training and assessing naval ships and crews' combat readiness before deployment. Later, he served as the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Foreign Cooperation and Intelligence) at Naval Headquarters in New Delhi, where he was instrumental in enhancing international naval relationships and advancing strategic maritime initiatives.
As the new Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, Rear Admiral Maddula will lead one of the Navy's most formidable fleet formations. Based in Mumbai under the Western Naval Command, the Western Fleet consists of aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, submarines, fleet support ships, and other advanced combat assets that protect India's western coastline and maritime interests in the Arabian Sea and the broader Indian Ocean Region.
The Western Fleet is crucial for maritime security, power projection, anti-piracy efforts, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, joint military exercises, and maintaining a robust naval presence across key sea lanes. It remains pivotal in ensuring operational readiness to tackle emerging maritime security challenges.
The Change of Guard ceremony formally marked the handover of command from Vice Admiral Vivek Dahiya, who successfully led the fleet through vital operational deployments and exercises. The Indian Navy recognized his leadership and contributions while welcoming Rear Admiral Srinivas Maddula to his new role.
