Rajnath Singh Reviews Eastern Air Command's Preparedness, Emphasizes Technological Agility and Self-Reliance in Modern Warfare
On June 20, 2026, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh evaluated the operational readiness of the Indian Air Force's Eastern Air Command (EAC) in Shillong. During his visit, he stressed the significance of technological agility, strategic vision, and institutional innovation in tackling the challenges posed by modern warfare.
While engaging with air force personnel at the EAC Headquarters, Singh pointed out the rapidly changing nature of global security threats. He emphasized that relying solely on traditional military preparedness is insufficient in the current unpredictable global environment.

Singh highlighted the emergence of hybrid warfare, cyber threats, information warfare, logistics resilience, supply chain security, and drone-based operations as vital components of contemporary conflicts. He called for the Armed Forces to continuously evolve and modernize in response to these developments.
Underlining the necessity of self-reliance in defense, Singh described Aatmanirbharta as crucial for protecting national security on India's terms. He cited the success of Operation Sindoor as evidence of India's growing strength in indigenous defense capabilities and progress toward self-reliant military systems.

The Defence Minister asserted that Operation Sindoor sent a strong message to terrorists and their supporters, emphasizing India's non-negotiable stance on its security and sovereignty. He commended the Armed Forces for their vigilance, capability, and determination, which have further elevated India's global standing.
Singh praised the Eastern Air Command as a crucial component of India's eastern frontier security framework. He lauded the command for its professionalism and its role in border management, high-altitude operations, disaster response, and peacetime deployments.
He highlighted the strategic importance of the North-East, describing it as more than just a geographical boundary but as a key element of India's security and prosperity, as well as its Act East Policy. Singh noted that the increasing significance of the Indo-Pacific region has further enhanced the North-East's strategic relevance.
The Defence Minister also acknowledged the dedication and sacrifices of military personnel serving in challenging conditions. He noted that their commitment enables citizens to live securely and ensures prompt assistance during natural disasters and national emergencies.

Singh further emphasized the Armed Forces' role as a symbol of national unity and social cohesion. He noted the growing participation of women in the military, which reflects India's commitment to inclusivity and equality while adhering to cultural values.
The event was attended by Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Air Command, Air Marshal Inderpal Singh Walia, along with other senior officials from the Indian Air Force.
Rajnath Singh is also set to join the International Day of Yoga 2026 celebrations with troops at the Eastern Air Command Headquarters, highlighting the importance of physical fitness, mental well-being, and holistic health among military personnel.
