General Upendra Dwivedi Felicitates Ladakh Veterans with Distinguished Achievers Award
Ladakh, June 27, 2026: During a visit to the Indian Army's Fire and Fury Corps in Ladakh, the Chief of the Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, honoured five distinguished former soldiers with the Veteran Achievers Award. These veterans were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the welfare of ex-servicemen, healthcare delivery, community advancement, and nation-building efforts.
The award recipients included Colonel Tondup Wangail (Retired), Major Rinchen Dolma Kolto (Retired), Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Sonam Morup (Retired), Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Tashi Chhepal, Vir Chakra (Retired), and Naik Ghulam Haider (Retired).
The awards highlighted not only the veterans' illustrious military careers but also their dedication to societal service post-retirement. Through various philanthropic efforts, these awardees have significantly improved the lives of veterans, Veer Naris, military families, and residents in the remote and challenging terrains of Ladakh.
Their initiatives have revolutionized healthcare access in regions where medical facilities are scarce due to difficult landscapes, harsh weather, and dispersed settlements. By aiding medical outreach, supporting veterans in need of treatment, and facilitating healthcare access, these veterans have provided crucial support to former soldiers and their families.
The veterans have also been instrumental in enhancing welfare outreach for ex-servicemen and Veer Naris, ensuring that eligible beneficiaries remain connected with institutional support systems and have access to essential services and assistance.
Key initiatives by the awardees have focused on promoting skill development, financial independence, and self-sufficiency among veterans and their families. By fostering vocational training and community-based opportunities, they have enabled individuals to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the local economy.
Efforts by the awardees have also secured land-related and welfare measures for veteran families. In remote areas, where administrative accessibility and awareness of entitlements are limited, their interventions have helped families navigate official procedures and receive their entitled support.
Beyond the military community, the awardees have participated in community development projects, fostering cooperation between local residents, veterans, and government institutions, thereby contributing to social harmony and inclusive development across Ladakh.
Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Tashi Chhepal, Vir Chakra, exemplifies the enduring legacy of gallantry and service within the Indian Army. His continuous engagement with veterans and local communities embodies how the values cultivated in uniform persist long after retirement.
The recognition of Major Rinchen Dolma Kolto also underscores the significant role women veterans play in strengthening healthcare, social welfare, and community outreach. Her efforts have improved support systems in remote areas and encouraged greater female participation in community development.
Colonel Tondup Wangail, Subedar Major and Honorary Captain Sonam Morup, and Naik Ghulam Haider were similarly acknowledged for their committed efforts to improve veterans' welfare, assist families, and support grassroots development initiatives.
The ceremony highlighted the Indian Army’s dedication to maintaining lifelong bonds with its veterans. Even though soldiers retire from active service, their association with the Army and commitment to the nation continue through their civilian endeavors.
By honoring the five veteran achievers, the Army showcased examples of former soldiers leveraging their experience, leadership, and organizational skills to address real challenges faced by communities in Ladakh.
General Upendra Dwivedi’s interaction with the veterans emphasized the importance of acknowledging individuals who uphold the Army’s ethos of service before self. Their work demonstrates that military service transcends a soldier's years in uniform and evolves into a lifelong mission for society and the nation.
The Veteran Achievers Award serves as recognition of both individual excellence and collective responsibility. It honors veterans who have transformed military values into meaningful efforts benefiting former servicemen, Veer Naris, military families, and local communities.

The achievements of these five awardees hold particular significance in Ladakh, where geographical challenges make welfare and healthcare delivery difficult. Their personal involvement and continuous presence have effectively bridged the gap between institutions and the people residing in remote regions.
The felicitation also conveyed a broader message to the veteran community nationwide. It showcased the immense potential of retired soldiers to contribute to governance, healthcare, social development, education, skill-building, and community leadership.
The Indian Army articulated the spirit of the recognition with the message: “Service is a lifelong journey; building a stronger, united India.”
The five Veteran Achievers epitomize this message through their ongoing dedication to the people of Ladakh. Their transition from military service to community leadership serves as an inspiring testament to how the values of the Armed Forces can continue to fortify the nation long after a soldier retires from active duty.
