Rajnath Singh Joins Badakhana with Indian Navy Personnel in Visakhapatnam, Praises Indo-Pacific Role

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on October 5, 2026, interacted with Indian Navy personnel during a traditional ‘Badakhana’ in Visakhapatnam, using the occasion to praise the force’s expanding operational reach and its role in protecting India’s maritime interests.

Singh said the Indian Navy ranks among the most powerful navies in the world and stressed its growing visibility across the Indo-Pacific region, an area that has become central to India’s maritime strategy and wider security outlook.

“The Indian Navy is counted among the most powerful navies in the world. The Indian Navy is making its presence felt across the Indo-Pacific region,” the Defence Minister said.

He also commended the Navy for stepping up whenever India or the international community has needed assistance, pointing to its work beyond conventional maritime defence. “I am also proud that whenever the nation and the world have needed it, our Navy has always fulfilled its duty,” he said.

The Indian Navy has increasingly become a key instrument of India’s maritime posture in the Indo-Pacific, carrying out missions that include maritime security, anti-piracy patrols, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and evacuation operations. Singh’s remarks reflected that broader role, placing the service’s operational commitments alongside its traditional warfighting responsibilities.

Visakhapatnam, where the interaction took place, is one of India’s most important naval centres on the eastern seaboard and serves as the headquarters of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Naval Command. The setting gave the Defence Minister a direct opportunity to meet sailors and acknowledge their service.

The ‘Badakhana’ is a traditional Armed Forces gathering in which officers and personnel share a meal, and is often used as an informal setting for interaction and morale-building. Singh’s presence at the event underlined the significance the Ministry of Defence attaches to direct engagement with serving personnel.

Singh said he was proud of the professionalism and dedication shown by Indian Navy personnel and highlighted their contribution to both safeguarding India’s maritime interests and supporting security and stability across the wider Indo-Pacific region.
