Rajnath Singh Commends BRO's Technological Innovations at Strategic Infrastructure Conclave
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the critical role of strategic infrastructure in the future of technology-driven warfare, pointing out that roads, tunnels, airfields, and ports remain essential for military operations despite advancements in weaponry and military technology. Speaking at the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) Strategic Infrastructure Conclave in New Delhi on July 16, 2026, Singh highlighted the importance of infrastructure development in enhancing national security and achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047.
Singh noted the changing nature of warfare, where advanced weapons, precision strikes, and modern military platforms increasingly shape battlefields, yet the importance of strategic infrastructure persists. He stressed that military success is influenced not only by combat capabilities but also by the supporting infrastructure's quality and accessibility, which sustain military effectiveness and operational deployments.
"Sometimes, the first front of a war is not at the border itself, but on the road that leads our soldiers to the frontline. Therefore, the person who builds that road is as vital a guardian of national security as the soldier who stands at the border," Singh remarked, commending the BRO for enhancing India's strategic capabilities through infrastructure innovations.
The Defense Minister praised BRO's use of emerging technologies to develop world-class infrastructure in some of India's most challenging terrains. He stated that the organization plays a crucial role in advancing the government's commitment to national security while significantly contributing to India's developmental goals.
Reflecting on BRO's six-and-a-half-decade journey, Singh noted the organization's evolution from a road construction agency to a globally respected strategic infrastructure entity. Landmarks such as the Atal Tunnel, Umling La Pass, and the Sela Tunnel were highlighted as symbols of BRO's engineering prowess, technological capabilities, and dedication under challenging conditions.
Singh acknowledged the invaluable contributions of BRO personnel, stating that their commitment to national service repeatedly proves that even the toughest geographical and environmental challenges can be overcome through determination and innovative excellence.
Singh described BRO as a leader in adopting advanced technologies, particularly in tunneling, which has transformed infrastructure development in urban and mountainous regions. He noted the rapid pace at which BRO constructs roads, highways, and strategic assets, showcasing a successful blend of human ingenuity and technological advancement.
Emphasizing connectivity's role in nation-building, Singh called it a crucial element of civilizational development, reaffirming the government's commitment to comprehensive connectivity through road, rail, air, and digital infrastructure across India. Singh spotlighted initiatives like the Vibrant Village Programme, aimed at transforming India's border villages from being perceived as the last to the first. Calling for collaboration in nation-building, Singh said infrastructure development requires contributions beyond the government, involving industry, academia, engineers, and administrators. Lieutenant General Harpal Singh, Director General of Border Roads, also addressed the conclave, discussing the evolving parameters of strategic capability. He stated that strategic infrastructure is evaluated not just by what is built, but by how intelligently projects are planned, executed, monitored, and maintained sustainably.
Lt Gen Harpal Singh highlighted BRO's transformative journey driven by technological innovation, organizational reforms, and modernization. He noted the emphasis on digital planning, AI-enabled solutions, mechanized construction, and collaboration with industry and academia to build resilient strategic infrastructure for future needs.
During the event, Rajnath Singh presented awards to various BRO projects for excellence in infrastructure development and launched two digital platforms for project management and recruitment, marking key milestones in BRO's digital transformation.
Singh further underscored BRO's commitment to innovation and excellence by releasing three flagship publications—'Path Pradarshak', 'Oonchi Sadken', and 'Path Vikas'—documenting BRO's engineering achievements and future vision. The release of the BRO Anthem paid tribute to the organization's dedicated personnel.
The two-day Strategic Infrastructure Conclave, starting on July 15, brought together military leaders, policymakers, infrastructure experts, industry representatives, technology partners, and BRO personnel to discuss emerging technologies and strategic infrastructure development. The sessions covered the complete project lifecycle, from planning to execution, with a focus on using advanced technologies to enhance development in India's border regions.
