President Murmu and Armed Forces Chiefs Launch Durand Cup 2025 Trophies at Rashtrapati Bhavan

India's President, Smt Droupadi Murmu, ceremonially unveiled and flagged off the Durand Cup 2025 trophies at a special event held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on Friday. This occasion marked the official commencement of Asia's oldest football tournament, honoring its historic ties with the Armed Forces.

The ceremony was attended by prominent military officials, including Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Amar Pratap Singh, lending the event a sense of military honor and pride.

President Murmu, in her speech, underscored the role of sports in promoting national unity and character building. She emphasized that sports inculcate discipline, determination, and teamwork—traits vital beyond the playing field. She noted, "Sports have the unique power to connect people, regions, and countries. In India, it has been a powerful tool for national integration. All fellow citizens get thrilled when the tricolour flies at the Olympics or any international event."

Discussing football's widespread appeal, the President stated, "Football has a special place in the hearts of millions. It is not just a sport; it is a passion. The game is about strategy, endurance, and working together towards a common goal.”

She praised the Durand Cup for its significant impact on Indian football and youth development, highlighting its role in providing a national platform for young talent to display and hone their skills. Additionally, she commended the Indian Armed Forces for maintaining and enhancing the tournament's rich legacy and their dedication to fostering sportsmanship.

Established in 1888, the Durand Cup stands as one of the world's oldest football tournaments and remains a prestigious event in India's sports calendar. The 2025 edition is anticipated to feature leading national and club teams, reinforcing its reputation as a prominent event that advances football throughout the country.
