Pigeon Intercepted Near Jammu Border Raises Espionage Concerns

Security personnel have apprehended a pigeon suspected of involvement in espionage near the international border in Jammu, raising concerns about potential cross-border spying activities.

The bird was captured during the night of August 18 to 19, around 9:00 PM, near the Kathmaria border post, specifically at Forward Defence Post 69. According to sources, the pigeon was discovered in circumstances that suggested it might be used for surveillance purposes.

This incident is not unprecedented, as pigeons have previously been implicated in cross-border communication. In 2016, a pigeon was detained by Punjab police for allegedly carrying a note from the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, which threatened then-Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Similarly, in 2020, another bird suspected of espionage was captured in Kathua with what was described by officials as a “coded message.”

Security analysts emphasize that the current incident should be approached with caution, particularly following the 2021 explosions at the Jammu Air Force Station caused by drone-dropped IEDs. A senior security official remarked, “Unconventional tactics like these are not new and cannot be ignored.”

Investigators are examining the note for handwriting analysis, fingerprints, and other forensic evidence. Meanwhile, opinions are divided among residents along the border—some view the event as a practical joke, while others fear it could be an indication of a larger terror plot.

As the investigation progresses, security forces have intensified patrols, surveillance, and intelligence operations throughout the Jammu region.
