Pakistan Deploys Three Army Companies in Rawalpindi for Six Months Amid Heightened Security Concerns

Pakistan has authorised the deployment of three Pakistan Army companies in Rawalpindi for six months to carry out what the government has described as “sensitive security duties”, according to an order issued by the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control.

The directive, dated August 21, 2026, was issued under Article 245 of Pakistan’s Constitution, which permits the armed forces to assist civil authorities in maintaining security. It was moved after a request from the Punjab government’s Home Department and came into force immediately.

In the notification, the troops were tasked with supporting the Rawalpindi district administration in dealing with any “undesirable situation” and responding to unforeseen circumstances during the deployment period. The order places the Army in a support role alongside the civil administration rather than as a replacement for it.

Neither the federal authorities nor the Punjab government has publicly identified the specific threat, incident or security concern that led to the request for military assistance. The exact responsibilities assigned to the three companies have also not been disclosed.

Pakistani media reports said the troops would help the civil administration preserve security and meet any sensitive security requirements in Rawalpindi, a city that carries particular strategic weight because it houses the General Headquarters of the Pakistan Army and functions as one of the country’s key military and administrative centres.

The move comes amid what appears to be heightened security concerns in the city, although officials have not indicated that it is linked to any specific incident. The order was circulated to senior federal and Punjab government officials as well as military authorities.

The latest deployment adds to the long-standing pattern of Pakistan’s armed forces being called upon to assist civil authorities during periods of elevated security requirements, even as the underlying assessment that prompted this particular request remains undisclosed.
