Operational Preparedness Assessed by Maj Gen Deshpande in Arunachal Pradesh
During a recent visit to frontline formations in Arunachal Pradesh, Major General VS Deshpande, the General Officer Commanding of the Dao Division under the Indian Army’s Spear Corps, thoroughly assessed the operational preparedness. This inspection underscores the Army's ongoing focus on maintaining combat readiness in one of India's most strategically important areas.
Major General Deshpande examined the morale of the troops, logistics capabilities, and the operational efficiency of units stationed along the eastern Himalayan border. The evaluation prioritized readiness in the challenging high-altitude terrain, where adverse weather and topographical conditions continuously test mobility and defense operations. His engagement with the troops conveyed a strong affirmation of their dedication and professionalism.

A significant aspect of his visit was paying homage at the Nyukmadong War Memorial, a site that honors the brave Indian soldiers who fought in the 1962 battle. Situated above the Tawang–Bomdila route, the memorial is a poignant reminder of past sacrifices and the strategic necessities that continue to influence India's military stance in the area.
This visit follows a period of increased border vigilance and Major General Deshpande’s meeting with Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen KT Parnaik (retd) on July 13. Their dialogue included topics such as border management, welfare initiatives under the Army's Sadbhavana programme, and the significance of civil-military collaboration in the Vibrant Village Programme, which aims at strengthening border communities through development initiatives.

The Spear Corps is critical to India’s northeastern defense strategy, with units like the Arunachal Scouts—formed after past incursions—providing essential knowledge of the terrain and culture for border surveillance and defense. The Army's deployment in Arunachal Pradesh, backed by a seasoned officer cadre, remains crucial in ensuring India's sovereignty against evolving regional threats.
The GOC’s evaluation reaffirms the Army’s commitment to staying alert and adaptable amidst ongoing Chinese assertiveness and the complex border dynamics in the eastern sector.
