NDA Integrates SIG Sauer SIG716 Rifles into Cadet Training Program
The National Defence Academy (NDA) has introduced the SIG Sauer SIG716 assault rifle into its training program to equip cadets with knowledge of modern battlefield weapon systems during the early stages of their military education.
The SIG 716, produced by SIG Sauer, is currently the Indian Army's primary battle rifle and is extensively used in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations, particularly in sensitive border areas and high-altitude locations.
Army officials have indicated that incorporating this rifle into the NDA's armoury intends to acquaint future officers with advanced infantry weapons before they transition to service academies and operational units following their commissioning.
The initiative aims to enhance the firing standards, shooting proficiency, and weapon handling skills of the cadets, aligning military training with the latest technological developments in warfare.
Chambered for the 7.62x51 mm calibre, the SIG 716 was procured by the Indian Army in 2019 through a fast-track process to boost infantry firepower. It is known for better accuracy, more significant stopping power, and greater reliability compared to older rifles like the INSAS, especially under challenging operational conditions.
Weapons training is a critical component of the NDA curriculum, particularly for cadets destined for the Army. The program emphasizes firing accuracy, tactical movements, combat drills, and weapon handling, progressing through increasingly advanced firing exercises.
NDA sources have revealed that cadets begin firing practice in their fourth term, while those in the fifth and sixth terms participate in dedicated firing sessions. These sessions include application firing under simulated battlefield conditions and classification firing to evaluate individual accuracy and competency.
The SIG 716 is now part of a varied training arsenal at the academy, which also includes INSAS rifles, carbines, light machine guns, and various pistols, enhancing the NDA's mission to prepare future military leaders for contemporary combat situations.
