NCC Confers Honorary Colonel Rank on Sampurnanand Sanskrit University VC Prof Bihari Lal Sharma
Sampurnanand Sanskrit University Vice-Chancellor Prof Bihari Lal Sharma was conferred the honorary rank of Colonel by the National Cadet Corps during a felicitation and investiture ceremony held at the university’s main building on Wednesday.
The ceremony was organised by NCC Group Headquarters, Varanasi ‘B’, which said the honour recognised Prof Sharma’s contribution to education as well as his continued support for advancing NCC activities, objectives and nation-building initiatives within the university.

Group Captain Vikas Kumar Panjiyar of NCC Group Headquarters, Varanasi ‘B’, formally presented the honorary rank to Prof Sharma during the event. In his remarks, Panjiyar described the Vice-Chancellor’s leadership, discipline, dedication to national service and contribution to the character-building of young people as key reasons for the recognition.
Addressing those present, Panjiyar said the NCC should be seen as more than a platform for military training. He said the organisation plays an important role in shaping young people by fostering discipline, leadership, self-confidence, moral strength and a spirit of service.

He added that NCC activities help cadets develop a sense of responsibility towards the nation while preparing them to become confident and responsible citizens. According to him, the organisation’s emphasis on discipline and leadership also feeds into broader nation-building efforts.
University support for such programmes formed the backdrop to the honour conferred on Prof Sharma. The investiture acknowledged his association with the NCC’s goals at the institution and his efforts to encourage student participation in activities that promote youth development and the values of national service.

After the honorary rank was conferred, NCC cadets presented a ceremonial Guard of Honour to Prof Sharma, bringing the formal proceedings to a close.
The event also drew attention to the role educational institutions can play in supporting NCC initiatives and creating opportunities for students to build leadership, discipline, teamwork and a sense of service to the nation.
