Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Meets Mauritius PM, Discusses Maritime Security, Defence Ties
Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan met Mauritius Prime Minister Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam on 12 August 2026 during an official visit to the island nation, with the talks focused on expanding maritime and defence cooperation between India and Mauritius.
The meeting, attended by India’s High Commissioner to Mauritius, Shri Anurag Srivastava, reviewed ways to further strengthen the two countries’ longstanding maritime partnership. The discussions covered a broad set of areas, including maritime security, training exchanges, information-sharing arrangements, capacity building and closer operational linkages between the Indian Navy and the Mauritius National Coast Guard.
A key theme of the engagement was the scope for deeper institutional and operational cooperation between the maritime forces of the two countries. Both sides discussed how stronger information exchange and more frequent training interactions could improve coordination and maritime domain awareness in the Indian Ocean Region, a space of growing strategic importance for both nations.
Admiral Swaminathan also conveyed the Indian Navy’s continued support for Mauritius in strengthening the capabilities of the Mauritius Police Force and the Mauritius National Coast Guard. He emphasised India’s commitment to assisting the country’s capability enhancement and capacity-building efforts through professional training, operational engagements and the development of maritime capabilities.
India and Mauritius already maintain close maritime ties, backed by regular naval engagements and a pattern of practical cooperation at sea. This includes training collaboration, joint surveillance of the Exclusive Economic Zone and other maritime security initiatives. The Indian Navy has also sustained regular interaction with the Mauritius National Coast Guard through operational cooperation and capacity-building activities.
The latest high-level exchange fits into India’s broader effort to deepen maritime partnerships across the Indian Ocean Region. For New Delhi, such engagements are aimed at improving regional maritime security, supporting partner nations in building capability and increasing operational coordination among friendly maritime forces.
The visit also underlined the shared India-Mauritius commitment to a secure and stable maritime environment in the Indian Ocean. The engagement was in line with the broader vision of MAHASAGAR and India’s emphasis on collaborative maritime security, with both countries continuing to place maritime cooperation at the centre of their bilateral relationship.
