Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan Begins Four-Day Mauritius Visit to Boost Maritime Ties
Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan began a four-day official visit to Mauritius on 10 August 2026, in a move aimed at expanding bilateral maritime cooperation and deepening defence ties between India and the island nation.
The visit, scheduled from 10 to 13 August, forms part of India’s continuing engagement with Mauritius, which New Delhi regards as an important maritime partner in the Indian Ocean Region. During the visit, Admiral Swaminathan is set to meet the senior leadership of the Government of Mauritius and discuss a range of issues of mutual interest, including maritime security, defence cooperation, capacity building and broader military collaboration.
According to the official outline of the visit, the planned engagements are intended to strengthen operational-level linkages between the two countries while further consolidating the strategic partnership that India and Mauritius have built over time. The visit also signals the emphasis India places on stronger maritime partnerships and on advancing collective security in the Indian Ocean.
India and Mauritius have long maintained close maritime ties rooted in historical links, mutual trust and shared interests at sea. That relationship has been reflected in regular interactions between the Indian Navy and the Mauritius National Coast Guard across several areas, including training exchanges, operational engagements, Joint Exclusive Economic Zone surveillance missions, port calls and hydrographic cooperation.
Beyond bilateral mechanisms, the two countries are also involved in wider multilateral maritime efforts and regional forums that focus on cooperation and maritime security. Mauritius has been a regular participant in a number of Indian Navy-led initiatives, among them the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), MILAN, the International Fleet Review, the Goa Maritime Conclave, IOS SAGAR and Exercise AIKEYME.
These continuing military and maritime engagements are aligned with the vision of MAHASAGAR — Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions — which seeks to promote cooperation, security and development among countries of the Indian Ocean Region.
