MoD Inks ₹2,095 Crore Deal with BDL for INVAR Anti-Tank Missiles
The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract valued at ₹2,095.70 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the acquisition of INVAR anti-tank guided missiles. This agreement is expected to significantly bolster the Indian Army's capabilities in armoured warfare.
The missiles are intended for use with the Army’s T-90 main battle tanks, enhancing their ability to execute precision strikes and increasing their effectiveness in mechanised warfare. The contract falls under the 'Buy (Indian)' category, supporting the government's initiative to promote self-reliance and enhance domestic defence production.
Manufactured at BDL's local facilities, the INVAR missile system is composed entirely of components sourced within India, including its guidance and propulsion units. The weapon is a laser-guided anti-tank missile designed to hit both stationary and moving armoured targets. It can be launched directly from the T-90's gun barrel, offering rapid deployment and heightened accuracy in intense combat situations.
The INVAR system is engineered to counter modern armoured vehicles equipped with explosive reactive armour, thereby improving the tactical edge and survivability of tank crews. According to the Ministry, this procurement will greatly enhance the Indian Army’s preparedness in regions where armoured manoeuvre warfare is crucial.
Bharat Dynamics Limited, a key supplier of guided weapon systems to the armed forces, is broadening its role in India's missile industry with this contract. This agreement also aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which seeks to reduce dependency on imports and foster indigenous research, development, and production within the defence sector.
This contract is part of a series of recent modernisation initiatives by the Ministry of Defence aimed at upgrading India’s missile, armour, and combat capabilities.
