Meet Wing Commander Vernon Keane: The Pilot Who Refused to Eject and Saved a Nation from Disaster
When machines fail at 2,500 feet and seconds separate life from death, only the finest emerge as heroes. One such hero is Wing Commander Vernon Desmond Keane, a fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force, who was recently awarded the Shaurya Chakra for his fearless courage and superior airmanship during a near-fatal sortie that could have ended in catastrophe—for himself and countless civilians on the ground.
On 24th July 2023, while flying a Jaguar fighter aircraft, Wing Commander Keane encountered an unprecedented emergency—a simultaneous Oil 1 and Oil 2 system failure, never before experienced in the aircraft's operational history. This critical malfunction indicated an impending seizure of both engines, demanding immediate shutdown procedures not even envisaged in standard protocols.
Faced with this severe mid-air emergency, Keane demonstrated nerves of steel. He shut down the left engine and began maneuvering towards the nearest runway on the power of the remaining engine. But fate had another test in store. As the aircraft descended to 2,500 feet, the right engine catastrophically failed, leaving the aircraft gliding without power over the densely populated town of Gorakhpur.
In this terrifying moment—where most would have ejected—Keane chose to stay with his aircraft. Aware of the potential disaster an uncontrolled crash could cause, he exhibited superlative flying skills by steering the powerless jet away from populated areas. He then jettisoned the empty fuel tanks to minimize any risk on the ground.
But Keane wasn’t done. Refusing to give up, he attempted the nearly impossible—a relight of the previously shut-down left engine. Against all odds, the engine roared back to life. With renewed control, he executed a successful single-engine landing, saving not just the aircraft—a national asset—but also countless civilian lives.
For this act of exceptional gallantry, President Droupadi Murmu awarded Wing Commander Vernon Keane the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award, at the Gallantry Awards 2025 ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The citation praised his "superlative flying skills, exceptional situational awareness, and courage under extreme duress."
This is not Keane's first recognition—he also holds the Vayu Sena Medal (VM), further underlining his legacy as one of IAF’s most skilled and committed aviators.
