The Operation That Defined Him: December 2017, Line of Control

In early December 2017, Naib Subedar Anil Kumar Dahiya was serving as Second-in-Command of a small detachment deployed on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The unit’s task was clear and high-risk: intercept terrorist movement originating from launch pads across the LoC.

On 4 December 2017, at approximately 0500 hours, Dahiya volunteered for a critical phase of the mission. Displaying outstanding fieldcraft, he crawled forward with a colleague under the cover of darkness and reached within 100 metres of a known terrorist launch pad. With complete stealth, he successfully planted an improvised explosive device.

What followed was a masterclass in endurance. Dahiya remained motionless in position for the next 36 continuous hours without food, without water, and without any movement maintaining constant surveillance just 100 metres from the enemy launch pad. In the freezing December conditions of the LoC, such a vigil tests not only physical stamina but mental fortitude of the highest order.

After 36 hours of alert observation, he detected the movement of five heavily armed terrorists at a track junction. At the decisive moment, he triggered the explosive device and simultaneously opened fire with his personal weapon from a range of approximately 180 metres. Three terrorists were eliminated in the engagement.

The citation for his Shaurya Chakra specifically highlighted his “valour, inspiring leadership, outstanding tactical acumen, and unflinching determination” during the operation.
