In a moment that captured the essence of the Indian Army’s meritocratic spirit, Lieutenant Vishal Kumar, son of a retired Sepoy from the 4 Bihar Regiment, was awarded the Sword of Honour and the Gold Medal at the Passing Out Parade of the 158th Regular Course at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun.

The historic ceremony, reviewed by the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, marked not only the commissioning of over 500 young officers but also the induction of the first batch of nine women officers from the National Defence Academy (NDA) — a watershed moment for gender integration in combat arms.

A Son Rises from a Soldier’s Legacy

Lieutenant Vishal Kumar hails from Patna, Bihar. His father, Sepoy Vinod Kumar, served with dedication in the 4 Bihar Regiment before retiring. His mother, Anjana, supported the family as a homemaker. Despite the family’s modest means and deep military roots, Vishal became the first in his lineage to don the officer’s uniform.

From an early age, the disciplined environment of Military School Chail (Rashtriya Military School, Chail) shaped his character. The school’s rigorous training, modelled on NDA standards, ignited his dream of serving as an officer. He cleared the NDA entrance examination on his very first attempt — a testament to focused preparation and unwavering resolve.

The Road to IMA and the Ultimate Honour

After NDA, Vishal Kumar joined the Indian Military Academy, where he excelled across every domain — academics, military training, physical fitness, leadership, and extracurricular activities. He was appointed Academy Cadet Adjutant (ACA), a position of significant responsibility, and marched at the rear of the parade during the grand Passing Out Parade.

On 13 June 2026, his consistent excellence earned him the two most coveted distinctions at IMA:

  • Sword of Honour — awarded to the cadet who demonstrates the highest standards of overall performance and officer-like qualities.
  • Gold Medal — for standing first in the Order of Merit in the Regular Course.

He outshone his batchmates, with Academy Under Officer Prince Raj securing the Silver Medal (second position) and Senior Under Officer Tejas Bhatt receiving the Bronze Medal (third position).

“I Owe This to My Instructors and My Parents”

In an emotional interaction after the pipping ceremony — where proud parents pin the stars of rank on their children’s shoulders — Lieutenant Vishal Kumar shared his heartfelt gratitude:

“I owe this to my instructors and my parents, who dedicated so much time to this. They prioritised this goal above other things, and that is how I have achieved this milestone today.”

Reflecting on the roots of his journey, he added:

“I attended a military school during my childhood, where the environment and training methods were modelled after the NDA. That inspired me to join the NDA, and today, I have received my commission.”

His words resonated deeply with thousands of defence aspirants watching across the country — a reminder that background is no barrier when determination meets opportunity.

A Historic Parade and a Glorious Future

President Droupadi Murmu, in her address, congratulated the newly commissioned officers and emphasised the values of character, competence, and commitment. She highlighted the historic commissioning of women officers and the presence of foreign cadets from friendly nations, underscoring India’s growing role in global military training and cooperation.

The parade featured traditional elements including the Nishan Ceremony, Antim Pag (the final step symbolising the transition from cadet to officer), a stirring helicopter flypast, and the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff Banner to the Champion Company.

An Inspiration for Every Aspirant

Lieutenant Vishal Kumar’s story is more than a personal triumph — it is a powerful message for every young Indian dreaming of wearing the olive green uniform. From the son of a Sepoy who served in the ranks to the recipient of IMA’s highest honour, his journey embodies the Army’s core ethos: “Veerta aur Vivek” (Valour and Wisdom).

For aspirants preparing for NDA, CDS, AFCAT, or SSB interviews, his achievement reinforces timeless lessons:

  • Start early with disciplined habits (as Military School Chail taught him).
  • Aim for holistic excellence — academics alone are not enough.
  • Draw strength from family support and never forget your roots.
  • Leadership is earned through consistent performance under pressure.

As the newly commissioned officers step into their units and take on the responsibility of leading soldiers, Lieutenant Vishal Kumar carries not just the Sword of Honour but also the hopes of countless families who see in him a reflection of their own aspirations.
