Meet Lieutenant Robin Singh Talan and Lieutenant Swati Kumari: College Sweethearts Now Serving in the Army and Navy
In the majestic setting of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, a story of love, grit, and national service reached a beautiful milestone on Saturday. Lieutenant Robin Singh Talan was commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army during the Passing Out Parade. Watching with quiet pride from the stands was his wife, Lieutenant Swati Kumari, a commissioned officer of the Indian Navy since 2021.
What makes their story truly special is that they are not just husband and wife in uniform — they are college sweethearts who nurtured a shared dream of serving the nation and turned it into reality, one in the Army and the other in the Navy.
From College Days to a Shared Dream
Robin Singh Talan, 28, from Greater Noida, and Swati Kumari, 27, first met during their college years. What began as a young romance soon blossomed into a deep partnership rooted in common values and a powerful aspiration: to wear the uniform and dedicate their lives to the defence of the country.
Both prepared together for the demanding entrance examinations required to join the armed forces. Their journey was never easy, but their mutual support and determination kept them moving forward.
Swati Kumari’s Path to the Indian Navy
Swati cleared the rigorous selection process and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Navy in 2021. Since then, she has been serving with distinction in the Navy. Her achievement marked the first major step in fulfilling the couple’s dream.
Robin Singh Talan’s Journey: From Airman to Army Officer
Robin’s path was marked by exceptional perseverance. He initially joined the Indian Air Force as a Corporal (airman). While serving in the IAF, he continued to pursue his goal of becoming a commissioned officer.
In 2022, his hard work bore fruit when he successfully cleared the competitive examination for the Army Cadet College (ACC) wing at the Indian Military Academy. The ACC route is specifically designed for serving personnel who aspire to rise from the ranks to the officer cadre. Robin underwent the intense training at IMA and, on Saturday, was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army.
His journey from airman to officer stands as a powerful example of what dedication and sustained effort can achieve within the armed forces.
Marriage and a United Front
In 2024, Robin and Swati got married. Their marriage further strengthened their bond and their shared commitment to service. Today, they represent a rare and inspiring inter-service couple — an Army officer and a Navy officer — united not only by love but also by their dedication to the nation.

A Proud Moment at the IMA Passing Out Parade
The commissioning ceremony at IMA was deeply emotional. As hundreds of young officers stepped out of the iconic Chetwode Building to join the Indian Army, Robin Singh Talan took his place among them. His wife, Lieutenant Swati Kumari, watched from the spectator stands in her Navy uniform, her presence adding a deeply personal and touching dimension to the occasion.
Robin’s father, Dhirendra Singh, a retired Subedar Major (Honorary Lieutenant) from the Indian Army, was also present to witness his son’s achievement. The moment carried special significance as it represented the continuation of a proud family legacy of military service.
In Their Own Words
Reflecting on their journey, Lieutenant Robin Singh Talan said:
“Both of us had been preparing together for the entrance exams to join the armed forces. I joined the Indian Air Force as a Corporal. Subsequently, I cracked the exam of Army Cadet College at IMA in 2022 before undergoing the necessary training to be finally commissioned as an officer in the Army today.”
Lieutenant Swati Kumari expressed her pride:
“Immensely proud to see him as a commissioned officer. Despite joining the Air Force as a Corporal, he continued his efforts to get commissioned as an officer in the Army. We’ve finally realised our dream of serving the country as officers.”
Robin’s father, Dhirendra Singh, added:
“Seeing my son and daughter-in-law donning uniforms of commissioned officers fills me with great pride and joy.”
An Inspiration for Defence Aspirants
The story of Lieutenant Robin Singh Talan and Lieutenant Swati Kumari is more than a personal success story — it is a beacon of hope and motivation for thousands of young defence aspirants across India.
It demonstrates that:
- Dreams nurtured in college can become reality with consistent effort.
- Serving personnel can rise from the ranks to become officers through routes like the Army Cadet College.
- Love and partnership can thrive alongside the demanding life of military service.
- Inter-service marriages are possible and can be a source of strength.
From college sweethearts to commissioned officers in two different services, Robin and Swati have shown that when two people share a dream and support each other through every challenge, even the most difficult goals become achievable.
Today, as Lieutenant Robin Singh Talan begins his journey as an Army officer and Lieutenant Swati Kumari continues her service in the Navy, they stand as a shining example of what it truly means to serve the nation — together.
Their story will undoubtedly inspire many young men and women who aspire to wear the uniform and dedicate their lives to the service of India.
