Lieutenant Colonel Neeraj Chopra

When Neeraj Chopra launched his javelin into the Tokyo sky in 2021, he didn’t just claim India’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in athletics—he launched a legacy. A legacy of courage, discipline, and national pride that continues to grow stronger with every stride he takes, not just on the track but now in uniform. As of April 16, 2025, this golden boy of Indian sport has been conferred with the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, an elite recognition reserved for India’s most inspiring citizens.

From Athlete to Honorary Soldier: A Journey of Grit

Neeraj’s story is a living testament to what unwavering focus, self-belief, and patriotism can achieve. Hailing from the humble village of Khandra in Panipat, Haryana, Neeraj joined the Indian Army as a Naib Subedar on August 26, 2016. Even as he trained for the world’s most demanding sports stages, he remained grounded in discipline, service, and humility—qualities that define both soldiers and champions.

Over the years, he rose steadily in the Army ranks—promoted to Subedar, then Subedar Major, and awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) for his meritorious contributions. His dedication was further recognized in 2022 with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM)—the highest peacetime honour of the Indian Armed Forces.

Joining an Elite League

With his honorary commission as Lieutenant Colonel, Neeraj joins a rare and prestigious group of Indian icons. Cricket legends MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev, shooter Abhinav Bindra, and the cricketing god Sachin Tendulkar—who holds an honorary rank in the Indian Air Force—are among those similarly honoured. This elevation is not just ceremonial; it reflects the deep respect the nation and its military hold for citizens who inspire through excellence, discipline, and national pride.

A Warrior On and Off the Field

Neeraj’s military bearing has always been visible in his calm demeanor, sharp focus, and relentless work ethic. Even after conquering Tokyo and being crowned the Diamond League champion, Neeraj hasn’t slowed down. His calendar remains packed with competitions that test not just his physical prowess but his mental tenacity.

Next up, Neeraj will represent India at the 71st ORLEN Janusz Kusociński Memorial in Chorzów, Poland, on May 23. Prior to that, he’s set to compete in the Doha Diamond League on May 16, a tournament where he’s already made headlines in past seasons.

Despite international fame, Neeraj stays true to his roots. Whether it’s mentoring young athletes, standing in solidarity during national crises, or postponing events due to military tensions between India and Pakistan—his decisions reflect integrity and responsibility.

How Neeraj Chopra Became Lt Colonel from Subedar Major?

Why His Story Matters

In an age where fame often overshadows values, Neeraj Chopra stands tall—literally and metaphorically—as a symbol of modern Indian excellence. His journey from a rural athlete to an Olympic gold medallist, a decorated Army JCO, and now an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel, proves that greatness isn’t just about personal glory. It’s about service. It's about character. It’s about inspiring a billion hearts to aim higher.

Salute to Lieutenant Colonel Neeraj Chopra

From the javelin field to the parade ground, from inspiring Olympic dreams to wearing the olive green with pride—Lieutenant Colonel Neeraj Chopra is not just an athlete. He’s a national icon, a soldier at heart, and a reminder that with hard work, humility, and patriotism, nothing is impossible.

Our youth should fallow his morals.Feeling proud

Siddu .H

He should have been given a permanent commission in the Indian Army after winning gold medal in the Olympics

Rajan

So he resigned first and become Ex Sub Major, then only he got the Hony Lt Col Rank. Otherwise there is no provision for a service soldier to directly become Lt. Col.

Himmat

exemplary dedication and hard work in the field of sports is not less then any academic achievements
