Army Law College Delegation Gains In-Depth Understanding of Military Justice System at IML Visit
A delegation consisting of 46 students and three faculty members from the Army Law College in Pune visited the Institute of Military Law (IML) in New Delhi on July 27, 2026. This visit aimed to acquaint future legal professionals with the military justice system and the legal framework governing the Indian Army.
Throughout their visit, the delegation received detailed briefings on the Institute of Military Law's operations, the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Branch's roles and responsibilities, and the various legal career paths available within the Indian Army. Interactive sessions offered students valuable insights into the distinct legal environment of the Armed Forces, where military law functions alongside the nation's civil legal system.
Officials from the Institute elaborated on the JAG Branch's critical role in advising military commanders on legal issues, managing military justice, ensuring adherence to military laws and regulations, and supporting disciplinary and operational legal processes. Additionally, students learned about the professional duties of military legal officers and the pathways to becoming officers in the JAG Branch of the Indian Army.
The educational visit also featured a guided tour of the Institute's advanced training facilities. One of the tour's highlights was the Brigadier Justice D.M. Sen Library, which boasts an extensive collection of legal literature, military law references, and research materials that aid in training military legal professionals.
The delegation proceeded to the Moot Court Martial Hall, where students were briefed on the procedures, practices, and intricacies of the Military Justice System. This facility provides realistic courtroom simulations that train officers in conducting court martial proceedings and other military legal processes. Through these demonstrations, students attained a practical understanding of military justice administration within the Armed Forces.
