Meet Foreign Officer Cadet Srijana Ghalley: From Bhutan’s Samtse Village to the Royal Bhutan Army
Foreign Officer Cadet (Women) Srijana Ghalley’s journey to the military began far from the world of uniforms, parade grounds, and martial traditions. Born in Samtse, Bhutan, into a humble family of eight, she grew up in a modest environment where military life seemed distant from everyday reality. Yet a brief moment during her childhood changed the course of her life forever. The sight of a military officer passing through her village in a pristine uniform left a deep and lasting impression on her young mind. That fleeting encounter ignited a powerful aspiration, planting the seed of a dream that would guide her future path.
Determined to build a meaningful career, Srijana pursued higher education and completed her Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation and Control Engineering. After graduating, she began working as a software engineer at Selise in Bhutan. Her professional life offered stability and the promise of a comfortable corporate career. However, despite the opportunities that lay ahead in the technology sector, she felt a stronger calling—one that went beyond personal success and professional growth. The desire to serve her nation and contribute to something greater than herself gradually overshadowed the comforts of corporate life.

Choosing a path defined by discipline, sacrifice, and service, she decided to leave behind the predictability of her engineering career and pursue her dream of becoming a soldier. This decision marked a significant turning point in her life. It was not merely a career change, but a commitment to a higher purpose rooted in service before self. With determination and unwavering resolve, she stepped forward to begin a journey that would test both her physical endurance and mental strength.
Her aspirations led her to the Officers Training Academy in Chennai, India, where she joined as a Foreign Officer Cadet. Entering the academy marked the beginning of an intense and transformative phase of her life. The rigorous training environment demanded resilience, discipline, and relentless effort. Over the course of nine challenging months, she faced demanding physical drills, academic training, and leadership development exercises designed to shape cadets into capable military officers.
Throughout this journey, she stood shoulder to shoulder with fellow cadets from various countries, forging bonds of camaraderie and mutual respect. Together they endured long hours of training, harsh conditions, and constant challenges. These experiences strengthened not only her body but also her character, teaching her that resilience is forged through hardship rather than comfort. The academy became a crucible where determination, perseverance, and the spirit of service were tested and refined.
Today, Srijana Ghalley stands transformed, ready to take on the responsibilities of military leadership. As she prepares to serve as a commissioned member of the Royal Bhutan Army, she carries with her the values instilled during her training—honour, loyalty, courage, and devotion. Her journey from a small village in Samtse to the demanding training grounds of a premier military academy reflects the power of determination and the strength of a dream pursued with conviction.
With unwavering dedication to His Majesty the King and the Kingdom of Bhutan, she now steps forward as both a shield and a sword for her nation. Her story stands as an inspiring testament to courage, sacrifice, and the belief that true purpose often lies beyond the comfort zone.

I heard first time Ghalley cast in Sikkim, seems it’s modify from Ghale to Ghalley..
She sounds like an officer from Nepalese origin. Ghale are known as one of four elites of the Gurung tribe. Good to know that she has decided to continue the lineage of her forefathers.
